BEREA, Ohio – The No. 8-nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University baseball team scored six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning for an 8-3 non-conference single game victory against No.6-ranked The College of Wooster on Heritage Field.
BW (28-8), who plays four more games in the next two days, has won seven straight games, 11 of its last 12 and ends its season against North Coast Athletic Conference opponents with a record of 9-1. Wooster (30-7), who had their 10 game wining streak snapped on Tuesday, has lost two straight games.
The Yellow Jackets scored one run in the sixth and one in the seventh before exploding for the six runs in the eighth inning. The Fighting Scots scored two runs in the fifth and one in the top of the eighth on a solo homerun that broke a 2-2 tie.
BW scored eight runs on eight hits and was led by senior shortstop Eric Murphy (Brook Park/Midpark) with two hits as he went 2-for 5 with a run scored. Six other Yellow Jackets had a base knock led by senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference first baseman Kyle Chontos (Pickerington/North) and sophomore Cole Nieto (Brunswick/St. Ignatius) each with an extra base knock. Chontos had a double and knocked in all three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Nieto had his third career-triple, a run scored, RBI and walk.
On the mound, four BW pitchers combined to allow three runs on seven hits with nine strikeouts and six walks. Junior right-hander Alex Albright (North Royalton) pitched the final inning and a third to record his six win of the season. Albright did not allow a hit or walk and struck out one batter.
The Yellow Jackets close out its home portion of their schedule on Thursday, April 30 when it hosts a non-conference doubleheader against the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford on Seniors' and Parents' Day at 1:30 p.m. BW ends its OAC and regular season schedule on Friday, May 1 when it travels to Bexley with a doubleheader against Capital University at 1 p.m.
