BW’s Zimmerman is Prospect League All-Star Game MVP

BEREA, Ohio – For the past three years, Baldwin Wallace University senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference pitcher and infielder Mark Zimmerman (Akron/ Green) has established himself as one of the best baseball student-athletes in the OAC, Mideast Region and all of NCAA Division III.  In the 2015 Prospect League All-Star Game in Richmond, Indiana on July 8, Zimmerman added to that stature when he was named as the Most Valuable Player. He finished the night with a pair of hits, scored one run and had three runs batted-in (RBI).

Zimmerman plays for the Kokomo Jackrabbits who compete in the west division of the Prospect League, which comprises most of the midwest. The Prospect league is a summer collegiate wood bat league that has over one hundred and seventy-five (175) former players who have gone on to play Major League Baseball. 

This summer Zimmerman leads Kokomo in hitting with a .295 average (51 for 173), 30 runs scored, 12 doubles, two triples, one home run, 24 RBI and 17 stolen bases. On the mound, he pitched in six games, including five starts, and has a 2-1 record with one save, a 0.66 earned run average (ERA) and 32 strikeouts and just seven walks and 14 base hits in 27 innings pitched for a 0.78 WHIP (walks and hits versus innings pitched).

At BW, Zimmerman has helped the Yellow Jackets compile an 88-45 record, including setting a school record for wins each season. He also has helped BW advance to an OAC Tournament and two straight NCAA Division III Tournament appearances, including its first-ever Division III College World Series appearance in 2014.  BW had a school-record 31-12 mark last spring.

For his career, Zimmerman has played in 128 games, with a .365 batting average (182 for 499) with 117 runs scored, 37 doubles, nine triples, eight home runs, 109 RBI and 23 stolen bases while splitting time between second base (freshman and sophomore) and third base (junior).  On the mound, he has appeared in 19 games, including 11 starts, and has a 6-3 record with a 3.97 ERA and 86 strikeouts in 81 and two-third innings pitched. Opponents are hitting just .232 off of him.

Last spring, Zimmerman was a first-team OAC pick for the third straight year and named a first-team ABCA/Rawlings All-Mideast pick and a first-team D3baseball.com All-Mideast Region selection. He also was named to the OAC Tournament all-tourney squad. Zimmerman hit .379 (66 for 174) with 46 runs scored, 14 doubles, five triples, four homers, 42 RBI and eight for eight in stolen bases. On the mound, he appeared in 11 games, including 10 starts, and compiled a 5-3 record with a 3.74 ERA and a team-best 68 strikeouts in 65 innings of work.
