Six Extra Base Hits Propel No.18 Baseball Team to Victory at Wittenberg

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- The 18th-ranked Baldwin Wallace University baseball team cruised to a 14-2 non-conference single game victory against Wittenberg University at Carleton Davidson Stadium.
 
BW (19-7) has now won five of its last seven games and improved to 5-1 against North Coast Athletic Conference opponents.  Wittenberg (5-17) has now lost six of its last seven games.
 
Yellow Jacket sophomore second baseman Cole Nieto (Brunswick/St. Ignatius) led off the game and the scoring with a solo homerun to left center in the top of the first inning.  BW tacked on four more runs in the second inning.  The Tigers cut into the lead when they scored one in the bottom of the third.  The Yellow Jackets answered with two runs in the fourth, three in the sixth, three in the seventh and two in the eighth
 
BW scored 14 runs and pounded out 18 hits and was led by junior outfielder Jerry Scholle (Hickley/Medina Highland) with a career-high four hits as he went 4-for-5 with his first career triple and homerun, two runs batted-in (RBIs) and two runs scored.  Senior outfielder Zach Ferster (Olmsted Falls) went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs scored and a RBI. 
 
In addition, senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference first baseman Kyle Chontos (Pickerington/North) and junior outfielder John Taylor (Stow/Hudson) and Nieto each added two hits.  Nieto had his homer and added a double and three RBIs. Chontos and Taylor each had two RBIs.
 
On the mound, freshman Nick Patrone (Bellaire) won his first collegiate game as he pitched five innings and allowed one run on one hit with two strikeouts and five walks.  Senior Chuck Jones (Kettering /Fairmont) pitched two innings and allowed one run on four hits with three strikeouts and no walks.  Freshman Alec Palmer (Oakdale, Pa. / West Allegheny) pitched one innings and did not allow a run or a base hit.  Sophomore Mitch Kern (Parma/Normandy) pitched a scoreless nine and also did not allow a base hit with a strikeout.
 
The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, April 18 when BW travels to Alliance, Ohio to play an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader versus the University of Mount Union at 1 p.m.
