Nieto Earns First Career OAC Baseball Weekly Honor

BEREA, Ohio – Baldwin Wallace University sophomore second baseman Cole Nieto (Brunswick/St. Ignatius) has been selected as the Ohio Athletic Conference Baseball Hitter of the Week.

Nieto, who garners his first career OAC weekly accolade, led the No. 8 nationally-ranked Yellow Jackets (31-8) to a 4-0 record last week and established a school single-season record for victories for the fourth straight season. 

He batted .632 (12-for-19) with five doubles, including three in one game, a triple and eight run batted-in (RBIs).  Nieto had a 1.000 slugging percentage and a .667 on-base average as he drew one walk, had a sacrifice fly and was hit-by-pitch which scored the winning run in an 8-3 win against previously 6th-ranked The College of Wooster.

In his first full season as a starter, Nieto tops the squad in hitting at .387 (63-for-163) with a team-leading 63 hits, 163 at bats, 43 runs scored and 15 doubles. He is second in triples with four and home runs with five.  Nieto ranks third with 40 RBIs. He has also swiped five bases in six attempts.

BW is back in action on Thursday, May 7 when it travels to Tiffin to compete in the first day of the four-team and double elimination OAC Baseball Tournament hosted by Heidelberg University, who was the regular season champion.  The third-seeded Yellow Jackets face the second-seeded Marietta College Pioneers at 4 p.m.   The top-seeded Student Princes face the fourth-seeded John Carroll University Blue Streaks at 1 p.m.
