MARIETTA, Ohio – As the second half of Ohio Athletic Conference play began, the Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team fell 64-56 to Marietta College inside Ban Johnson Arena.

Freshman forward Lilly Edwards (Dublin/Coffman) was the Yellow Jackets' (12-5, 6-4 OAC) leading scorer with 15 points off the bench. Junior Academic All-OAC guard Kasey Hughes (Springboro) added 14 points while junior Academic All-OAC guard/forward Mary Schentur (Broadview Heights/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) scored all 11 of her points in the first half. Sophomore forward Sydney Diedrich (Chardon/Gilmour Academy) led the rebounding corps once again with a game-high eight boards.

Senior guard Shay Lett led Marietta (11-6, 6-4 OAC) to the victory with a game-high 19 points. Junior forward Alexis Enochs was the only other double-digit scorer with 10 points.

Schentur got the Yellow Jackets off to a good start when she drilled a three-pointer for the first points of the night. After Marietta finally got on the scoreboard at the 8:16 mark, Schentur continued her personal run and sparked the BW offense. Hughes and Edwards added a combined 10 points to propel the Yellow Jackets out to a 15-2 lead with 4:16 left in the period. Held scoreless for almost five minutes, the Pioneers broke through the stalemate with a 6-0 run of their own to cut the deficit down to seven points. Schentur capped off the quarter with her second three-pointer of the night to give BW a 18-8 lead

The first minute of the second quarter featured a flurry of points before both teams' defenses locked down for a two-minute scoreless stretch. Meanwhile, Marietta started to find its rhythm on offense and cut the Yellow Jacket lead down to seven points, 28-21, with 4:06 remaining in the half. Defense again stole the show as only eight points were scored in the final minutes until the Pioneers capped off the half with a buzzer-beating trey for a 31-24 halftime score.

Marietta had the hot hand to open the second half, nailing three pointers for its first three made field goals. Every time the Pioneers would hit from deep, however, the Yellow Jackets came right back down the floor and scored. Eventually Marietta evened things up at 38-38 before senior Academic All-OAC forward Rachel Womeldorf (Lewis Center/Olentangy) completed a crucial three-point play to regain a BW lead. A small 5-0 run, however, gave the Pioneers their first lead of the night at 43-41 and they held a one-point advantage heading into the final period.

Much like the last meeting on Jan. 2, the fourth quarter was tightly contested. After the Yellow Jackets retook the lead using a 4-0 run, Marietta continued to shoot the three-point ball well to remain within striking distance. Another BW 4-0 run was followed by back-to-back treys from Lett and Enochs to put the Pioneers up 52-50. The Yellow Jackets tied the game for the final time at 54-54 with 2:39 left on the clock before Marietta closed out the game on a 10-2 run to seal the victory.

BW returns home on Wednesday, Jan. 23, to host Heidelberg University at 7 p.m. inside Ursprung Gymnasium.
