HILTON, HEAD, S.C. – The Baldwin Wallace University men's tennis team split a pair of matches to open its annual spring break trip to Hilton Head.
BW (6-1) opened the day by defeating Defiance College by a final score of 8-1 at Hilton Head High School. The Yellow Jackets closed out the first day and suffered their first loss of the season to Bridgewater (Va.) College by a final score of 6-3 at the Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center.
Against the Defiance, BW won all three double matches to take a 3-0 advantage. Sophomore All-Ohio Athletic Conference player Dominic Polifrone (Hudson) and sophomore Matt Harris (Akron/Revere) won first doubles by a score of 8-3. Senior Academic All-OAC players Nathan Katz (Upper Arlington/Bexley) and Jake Liebler (Medina) captured second doubles by a score of won 8-2. Senior Brian Carano (Akron/Revere) and freshman Jake Elbin (Findlay), who rejoined the team after playing on the men's basketball team all winter, took third doubles by a score of 8-5.
In the match with Bridgewater, the Yellow Jackets only took one doubles match as Katz and Liebler remained undefeated on the season with an 8-6 victory. BW won just two singles matches as Polifrone won at first singles by identical scores of 6-3 and Carano took fourth singles by identical scores of 6-2.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Monday, March 6 when they play a non-conference match against Roanoke (Va.) College at the Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center at 11:30 a.m.
