BEREA, OHIO -- Sophomore midfielder Justin Peterson (Rochester Hills, Mich./ Adams) scored the match-winning goal in the 46th minute and assisted on the other Yellow Jacket goal as the Baldwin-Wallace College men's soccer team defeated host SUNY-Fredonia (N.Y.), 2-1, today (Friday, September 10, 2010) in the first round of the SUNY-Fredonia Classic Tournament in Fredonia, New York. B-W plays Buffalo State (N.Y.) in tomorrow's final match at 3:00 p.m.
With the victory, the Yellow Jackets are now 4-1 overall and have won two straight. SUNY-Fredonia drops to 1-2 overall.
The Yellow Jackets opened the scoring at the 7:11 mark of the first half when junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference forward Carlin Vandendriessche (Medina/ Senior) scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season off an assist from Peterson. SUNY-Fredonia equalized in the 33rd minute and the score remained tied 1-1 at the intermission.
In the second minute of the second half, Peterson tallied the match-winner off an assist from sophomore midfielder Pat Brennan (Akron/ Walsh Jesuit). B-W then played solid defense for the win.
The Yellow Jackets outshot SUNY-Fredonia, 25-20, and outcornered them, 9-7.
In net, B-W sophomore Ryan Hulings (Centerville) played all 90 minutes and made four saves to earn the win.
Following its trip to SUNY-Fredonia, B-W plays a Sept. 14 match at cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University at 7:30 p.m. and then opens its home schedule on Saturday, Sept. 18 with a women's and men's doubleheader against Grove City College of Pennsylvania. The women begin play at 4:30 p.m. and the men kick off the nightcap at 7:00 p.m.
