BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's soccer team defeated host Oberlin College, 3-2, today (Tuesday, September 7, 2010) at Fred Shults Field in Oberlin.
With the victory, the Yellow Jackets are now 3-1 overall and next play this Friday (Sept. 10) when they travel to Fredonia, N.Y. to play host SUNY-Fredonia at 7:00 p.m. in the SUNY-Fredonia Classic. B-W also plays Buffalo State (N.Y.) University on Saturday (Sept. 11) at 3:00 p.m.
The Yellow Jackets opened the scoring at the 6:58 mark of the first half when junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference forward Carlin Vandendriessche (Medina/ Senior) scored his team-leading third goal of the season off an assist from sophomore midfielder Pat Brennan (Akron/ Walsh Jesuit). B-W maintained the 1-0 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Oberlin equalized at 56:05 when Wyatt Hayman scored. But only three minutes later, B-W took the lead back when Brennan scored off a pass from junior midfielder Andrew Thompson (Huron) at 59:42. The Jackets extended their advantage to 3-1 at 82:50 when junior forward Noah Eubanks (West Bloomfield, Mich./ West Bloomfield) scored the game-winner on a header with an assist from junior midfielder Joshua Thacker (Brecksville/ Brecksville-Broadview Heights). Oberlin made things interesting with a late goal in the 87th minute, but B-W held on for the win.
The Yeomen outshot B-W, 16-14, and outcornered the Yellow Jackets, 6-5.
In net, B-W sophomore Ryan Hulings (Centerville) played all 90 minutes and made five saves to earn the win.
Following its trip to SUNY-Fredonia, B-W plays a Sept. 14 match at cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University at 7:30 p.m. and then opens its home schedule on Saturday, Sept. 18 with a women's and men's doubleheader against Grove City College of Pennsylvania. The women begin play at 4:30 p.m. and the men kick off the nightcap at 7:00 p.m.
