BEREA, OHIO -- Sophomore midfielder Justin Peterson (Rochester Hills, Mich./ Adams) scored with 41 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime as the Baldwin-Wallace College men's soccer team tied host Case Western Reserve University, 1-1 in double overtime, today (Tuesday, September 14, 2010) in a nonleague match in University Circle. The tie was the first of the year for the Yellow Jackets.
With the tie, the Yellow Jackets are now 5-1-1 overall and next play on Saturday, Sept. 18 when they host Grove City College of Pennsylvania in a women's and men's doubleheader at The George Finnie Stadium in Berea. The women begin play at 4:30 p.m. and the men kick off the nightcap at 7:00 p.m..
The Yellow Jackets and Spartans played to a scoreless draw in the first half. The best scoring opportunity for either team was a shot by B-W senior forward Tyler Leister (Stow/ Stow-Munroe Falls) from 20 yards out with 33:29 remaining that went just high and over the goal.
In the second half, the game remained scoreless until CWRU gained a 1-0 lead with nine minutes remaining in on a goal by Vinny Bell. Then with just 41 seconds remaining, Peterson scored his team-leading fifth goal of the year on an assist from Leister. In overtime, neither team could find the back of net and the contest ended in a 1-1 draw.
The Yellow Jackets outcornered CWRU, 8-5, but were outshot by the Spartans, 21-16.
In net, B-W sophomore Ryan Hulings (Centerville) played all 90 minutes and made eight saves in the draw.
Following its match versus Grove City, the Yellow Jackets are next in action on Wednesday, Sept. 22 when they travel to Meadville, Pennsylvania to play Allegheny College at 7:30 p.m.
