Men’s Lacrosse Drops First Game of Season to Southern Virginia

FROSTBURG, Md. -- The Baldwin Wallace University men's lacrosse team dropped its first game of the 2018 season as it was defeated by Southern Virginia University in a non-conference game by a final score of 18-13 in Bobcat Stadium on the campus of Frostburg State University.

BW (2-1) was led by senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference attack Brock Riemenschneider (Rocky River) as he scored a career-high tying four goals and added one assist for five points.  Senior midfielder Tanner Roberts (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional), who took last season off, tallied a career-best tying three goals.   Senior All-OAC midfielder Derek Andrews (Alden, N.Y./Iroquois) rounded out the multiple goal scorers as he netted two goals.  Four other Yellow Jackets added a goal each. 

In net, senior All-OAC goalie Mike Dizonno (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) took the loss as he allowed 18 goals with 13 saves. 

Southern Virginia (4-0) was led by Seth Garff as he scored a game-high five goals.  Carter Bean tallied three goals while Jace Thomas and Mike Anderson each contributed two goals.

In the first quarter, BW opened the scoring when senior All-OAC midfielder Matt McDowell (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) scored the unassisted goal just 59 seconds into the game.  The Knights responded with two goals to take the 2-1 lead with the last score coming at 10:56. The Yellow Jackets regained the lead at 3-2 on goals by Riemenschneider and sophomore midfielder Ben Kubiak (Wooster) with the last coming at 8:17.  Southern Virginia knotted the game at 3-3 when it scored the extra man goal at 6:54.  BW regained the lead at 4-3 on Riemenschneider scored his second goal of the stanza at 5:37.  The Knights scored two unanswered goals to take the 5-4 lead with the last coming at 4:32.  The Yellow Jackets scored their final goal of the quarter when junior All-OAC midfielder Mike Nanosky (Medina) found the back of the cage off the assist from Kubiak at the 3:07 mark.  Southern Virginia scored the final two goals of the quarter to lead 7-5. 

The Knights opened the second half on a 5-0 run to push their lead to 12-5 with their last tally coming at the 12:09 mark.   BW got on the board in the second period to cut the lead down to 12-6 when Andrews scored the unassisted goal at 9:57.   Southern Virginia answered right back to extend its lead to 13-6 at the 6:50 mark.  The Yellow Jackets responded when Roberts scored his first goal of the season to cut the lead down to 13-7 off the Steinwachs assist at 5:58. The Knights got their final score of the first half at the 5:31 mark.  BW cut the lead down to 12-9 at halftime as it got the final two goals from and Riemenschneider and senior midfielder Alex Binner (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) with the last coming with 29 seconds left. 

The Yellow Jackets got their lone goal of the third quarter when Riemenschneider found the back of the cage at the 11:29 mark.  Southern Virginia scored the final four goals to lead 16-10 after three quarters of action. 

BW opened the fourth quarter on a 3-0 run to cut the lead down to 16-13 as it got two goals from Roberts and one from Andrews with Roberts second goal coming at 5:28. The Knights closed out the scoring as it netted two goals with the last coming with 58 seconds remaining.

The Knights outshot the Yellow Jackets by a margin of 53-34, including a 31-22 margin on net.

BW is back in action on Wednesday, February 28 when it travels to Latrobe, Pennsylvania for a non-conference game against St. Vincent College on Chuck Noll Field at 3 p.m.
