Men’s Lacrosse Suffers First OAC Setback to Ohio Northern on Seniors’ Day

BEREA, Ohio –   The Baldwin Wallace University team suffered its first Ohio Athletic Conference loss of the season as it fell to Ohio Northern University in a battle of the top two teams in the OAC by a final score of 16-4 on the Tressel Field inside the George Finnie Stadium on Seniors' and Parents' Day

Ohio Northern (12-1, 5-0 OAC) held a 5-0 advantage after the first quarter.   The Polar Bears scored the first four goals of the second period before BW (9-3, 5-1 OAC) tallied the final two scores of the quarter but trailed 9-2 at the intermission.  Ohio Northern netted six goals in the third quarter to extend its lead to 15-2.  The Yellow Jackets outscored the Polar Bears by a margin of 2-1 in the final quarter. 

BW was led by senior All-OAC midfielder Matt McDowell (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) as he scored two goals.   The Yellow Jackets got its other scores from senior attack Alex Binner (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) and sophomore midfielder Ben Kubiak (Wooster).

Ohio Northern was led by junior attack Max Weese as he tallied three goals with one assist for four points.  Junior All-OAC midfielder Anthony Pavone, junior face-off specialist William Peoples, junior attack Peter Hardt and sophomore midfielder Kevin Giles all had two goals. 

In net for BW, senior All-OAC goalie Mike Dizonno (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) took the loss as he allowed 13 goals with six saves in 40:28 minutes of action.  Junior netminder Nate Karatas (Penfield, N.Y.) played the final 19:32 and allowed three goals with four saves.

The Polar Bears scored all of five goals in the first quarter to take the early lead.   Ohio Northern got two goals from Weese and a goal each from Hardt, sophomore midfielder John Mullin and Pavone.

The Polar Bears started the second quarter on a 4-0 run to push their lead to 9-0 as they were led by Giles with two tallies.    The Yellow Jackets scored the final two goals of the half when it got scores from McDowell at 3:14 and Kubiak at 2:43.

Ohio Northern scored all five goals in the third quarter to take a 14-2 lead as it was led by two goals from Peoples with the last coming at the 4:29 mark.

The Polar Bears opened the final quarter scoring when Hardt found the back of the cage at the 6:11 mark to extend its lead to 15-2.  BW closed out the scoring as it got scores from McDowell at 5:23 and Binner at 4:27.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, April 14 when they travel to Westerville for an OAC game against Otterbein University inside Memorial Stadium at 1 p.m.  The last home game for BW is on Wednesday, April 25 when it hosts the University of Mount Union at 7:30 p.m.
