BW Men’s Lacrosse Beats W&J (Pa.), 9-3, in Season-Opener

BEREA, OHIO – The Baldwin Wallace University men's lacrosse team beat visiting Washington& Jefferson (Pa.) College, 9-3, in its season-opener on Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium. This was the first of three straight home games this week for the Yellow Jackets.

BW (1-0) outshot the Presidents, 45-24, including a 26-11 advantage in shots on-goal. Offensively, the Yellow Jackets were led by sophomore midfielder Shane Rakich (Dublin/ Olentangy Liberty) with two goals and an assist. The defense was led by All-Ohio Athletic Conference defender Josiah Greve (Loveland/ Milford) with five caused turnovers.  In goal, freshman Mike DiZonno (Buffalo Grove, Ill./ Stevenson) faced 24 W&J shots, allowed three goals and made eight saves. BW also led the ground ball battle, 35-18, and caused eight W&J turovers.

W&J (4-1), which lost for the first time this season, was led by three separate players with one goal each.

The Presidents gained a 1-0 lead before BW scored three unanswered goals to lead 3-1 at halftime. The Yellow Jackets increased their lead to 6-3 after three periods and scored three more in the fourth.

In the first quarter W&J grabbed a 1-0 lead on the only goal of the period.

In the second quarter, BW tied it at 1-1 at 8:39 when sophomore midfielder Jarrod Gilliam (Lewis Center/ Olentangy Orange) scored via an assist from junior attack Vinny Carson (Cleveland/ Benedictine). The Jackets took at 2-1 lead at 6:48 when freshman attack Brock Riemenschneider (Rocky River) scored an unassisted goal. The lead grew to 3-1 at 4:54 when sophomore MF Jake Rakich (Dublin/ Olentangy Liberty) scored an unassisted goal. BW also led 3-1 at halftime.

In the third quarter, BW increased its lead to 4-1 at 13:33 when sophomore MF Tanner Roberts (Murraysville. Pa./ Franklin Regional) scored via an assist from sophomore midfielder Shane Rakich (Dublin/ Olentangy Liberty), who is the twin brother of Jake. W&J then scored two straight goals to cut the BW lead to 4-3 with 8:45 left in the period. Undaunted, the Yellow Jackets got goals from sophomore MF Andrew Spicher (Erie, Pa./ McDowell) at 6:58 and another by Shane Rakich with an assist from sophomore attack James Wilhlem (Bay Village/ Cleveland St. Ignatius) to build a 6-3 advantage heading to the final stanza.

In the fourth quarter, BW extended its lead to 7-3 when sophomore MF Joey Briski (Pittsburgh, Pa./ Pine-Richalnd) scored via an assist from Brock Riemenschneider 43 seconds into the period, and grabbed an 8-3 lead 24 seconds later when sophomore defender Brian Musial (Broadview Heights/ Brecksville-Broadview Heights) scored an unassisted goal. Shane Rakich added his second goal of the match with 7:15 left with BW a man up.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, March 11 when the Yellow Jackets host LaRoche (Pa.) College at 5:00 p.m. and then host Hanover (Ind.) College on Friday, March 13 at 2:00 p.m.
