BW Men’s Lacrosse Ends Season with Loss in OAC Tournament Semifinals

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The third-seeded Baldwin Wallace University men's lacrosse ended its season as it was defeated by second-seeded Otterbein University, 11-8, in an Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament semifinal game on Sparky Ballenger Field inside Memorial Stadium.

BW (12-3) ends it season with a school-record 12 wins in a season and a school-record 11 straight wins to start the season. Otterbein (12-4), who was the OAC Tournament Champion a year ago, advances to its second straight championship to face top-seeded Capital University.

The Yellow Jackets scored and were by junior All-OAC attack Vinny Carson (Cleveland/Benedictine) with two goals and one assist. Mike Sullivan led the Cardinals with a game-high four goals.  Brandon Stroup and Conner Baak each added two goals.

Otterbein jumped out to an early 3-0 lead as it got two goals from Mike Sullivan with the last coming with 41 seconds left in the opening period.

Sophomore midfielder Alex Fioritto (Akron/Walsh Jesuit) got BW on the board and cut the lead down to 3-1 when he scored the unassisted goal just 11 seconds into the second stanza.    After another Cardinal score, the Yellow Jackets rattled off three unanswered goals from freshman midfielder Jack Gerlack (Rocky River), Carson and freshman midfielder Clay Sparks (Delaware/Hayes) to tie the game at 4-4 with 7:29 remaining in the first half.  Otterbein scored the final two goals of the period to lead 6-4 at the intermission.

The Cardinals opened the third period scoring to take a 7-4 lead.  BW responded when sophomore midfielder Brett Librock (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville East) cut the lead down to 7-5 as he found the back of the net off the assist from sophomore midfielder Shane Rakich (Dublin/Olentangy Liberty) at the 12:18.   Otterbein responded with three unanswered goals with the last coming at 6:01 to take a 10-5.   The Yellow Jackets cut back into the lead when Carson scored off the assist from sophomore midfielder Jarred Gilliam (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) at the 4:34 mark to cut the lead down to 10-6.   The Cardinals scored the final goal of the stanza to lead 11-6 after three periods of play.

BW scored the only two goals of the final period.  Sophomore midfielder Tanner Roberts (Murrysville, Pa. /Franklin Regional) scored the first unassisted at 2:02 while freshman attack Brock Riemenschneider (Rocky River) found the back of the net off the assist from Gerlack with two seconds left.

In goal for the Yellow Jackets, freshman netminder Mike Dizonno (Buffalo Grove, Ill./ Adlai E. Stevenson) faced 35 total shots, allowed 11 goals and made nine saves.
