BEREA, Ohio – Junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference attack player Vinny Carson (Cleveland/ Benedictine) scored four goals and added an assist as the Baldwin Wallace University men's lacrosse team beat visiting Saint Vincent (Pa.) College, 14-3, on Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium. The victory extended BW's best-ever start to 7-0.
In addition to Carson for BW, sophomore midfielder Shane Rakich (Dublin/Olentangy Liberty) scored three goals and sophomore MF Joey Briski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pine-Richland) scored two goals and added an assist. Saint Vincent (4-5) was led by senior attack player Nick Pensyl with two goals.
In goal for the Yellow Jackets, sophomore Mike Dizonno (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) faced 16 total shots, including six on-goal, allowed three Saint Vincent goals and made three saves as he improved to 7-0 overall. Junior Jake Harders (Rocky River) followed DiZonno in goal, faced two shots, both on-goal, and made two saves.
BW outshot Saint Vincent, 43-18, including 25-8 on-goal. The Yellow Jackets also had more ground balls, 37-15, and caused 24 Saint Vincent turnovers.
In the first period, BW scored the first four goals to take a 4-0 lead. The four-goal start was capped by junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference attack player Vinny Carson (Cleveland/ Benedictine) who scored his 12th of the season at 1:31. Saint Vincent closed its deficit to 4-1 with a goal with 11 seconds left in the opening period.
In the second period, BW scored the first six goals to build a 10-1 lead when sophomore midfielder Joey Briski (Pittsburgh, Pa./ Pine-Richland) scored his second of the game and 10th this season at 2:19 via an assist from sophomore MF Brett Librock (East Amherst, N.Y./ Williamsville East). St. Vincent ended the second period onslaught with a goal at 1:44 to close to 10-2 at halftime.
In the third period, BW scored the only two goals of the stanza and built a 12-2 advantage at 11:12 when Carson scored his fourth of the game and 15th of the season with an assist from freshman midfielder Jack Gerlack (Rocky River).
In the fourth quarter, BW scored two of the three goals to close out the win and continue its best-ever start at 7-0.
BW is back in action on Friday, April 3 when the Yellow Jackets host Wilmington College on Tressel Field at 6 p.m. The game was originally schedule to start at 1 p.m. but difficulty in finding officials for the game forced it to be moved to 6 p.m.
