BEREA, OHIO  – Freshman midfielder Alex Fioritto (Akron/ Walsh Jesuit) scored four goals, including the game-winner with 6:10 left, as the Baldwin Wallace University men's lacrosse team defeated visiting Olivet (Mich.) College, 12-10, on Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium.

With its win, BW is 3-0 overall and next plays on Saturday, March 15 in Steubenville, Ohio at  Fransiscan University at 1:00 p.m.  Olivet is 1-3 overall.

The Yellow Jackets led 1-0 after one perod, trailed 6-4 at halftime and led 9-8 after three stanzas. BW outshot Olivet, 39-38, including a 25-20 advantage in shots on-goal. BW and Olivet were tied with 44 ground balls each.

In addition to Fioritto for BW, sophomore attacker Vinny Carson (Cleveland/ Benedictine) had two goals and an assist and six other Yellow Jackets had a goal each. Freshman midfielder Brett Librock (East Amherst, N.Y./ Williamsville East) had three assists and freshman midfielder Tanner Roberts (Murraysville, Pa./ Franklin Regional) had a pair. Olivet was led by sophomore attacker James Collins' game-high five goals.

In goal, sophomore Jake Harders (Rocky River/St. Edward) started, played all 60 minutes, faced 38 shots, allowed 10 goals and made 10 saves.

The Yellow Jackets gained a 1-0 lead at 14:41 of the first period when Fioritto scored his fourth goal of the season. The lead was short-lived as the Comets scored four straight goals and took a 4-1 lead at 13:23 of the second period when Collins scored his third of the four Olivet goals.

BW received two goals from Carson that were sandwiched around a goal by Roberts to tie the game at 4-4 at 3:26 of the second stanza. The Comets added a pair of goals, including one 27 secionds before the intermission to lead 6-4 at halftime.

BW got Fioritto's fifth goal of the season at 14:31 of the third period and the fifth of the camaign from freshman attacker James Wilhelm (Bay Village/St. Ignatius) to tie it at 6-6 at 10:53.  The Jackets then got goals from freshman midfielder Joey Briski (Pittsburgh, Pa./ Pine-Richland) and freshman attacker Luke Happel (Pittsburgh, Pa./ Hampton) to lead 8-6 at 5:37. Undaunted, Olivet added two goals of its own to tie it again at 8-8 at 2:55 of the third.

BW responded with a goal 11 seconds later by Fioritto, his sixth of the season to gain a 9-8 lead. The advantage grew to 10-8 when freshman midfielder Jarrod Gilliam (Lewis Center/ Olentangy Orange) scored his fifth of the year with an assist from Carson at 14:32 of the final quarter. Again Olivet came back with a pair of goals to tie it at 10-10 at 6:26.

Fioritto would have none of it. He scored his fourth of the game and seventh this spring 16 seconds later to give BW back the lead at 11-10 with 6:10 remaining. That turned out to be the game-winner. Freshman midfielder Shane Rakich (Dublin/ Olentangy Liberty) added an insurance goal with 53 seconds left with an assist from Roberts.

Following its match versus Fransiscan, BW travels to Hanover, Indiana the next day and plays Hanover College on Sunday, March 16 at 2:00 p.m. The next home match is Wednesday, March 19 when the Yellow Jackets make up a non-league match versus Bethany (W.Va.) College at Finnie Stadium at 7:00 p.m.
