Men’s Basketball Sets School Record, Beats Crosstown Rival John Carroll

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team set the school-record for three-pointers in a game with 19 as it defeated crosstown rival John Carroll University in the final game of the Ohio Athletic Conference home-and-home series by a final score of 90-78 in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.

BW (2-4, 2-4 OAC), who scored a season-high 90 points and improved to 65-63 in the all-time series, had four players score in double figures led by freshman guard Drew Wennes (Huron) as he scored a career-high tying 21 points for the second straight night.  Sophomore guard Anthony Mazzeo (North Canton/Massillon) tallied 20 points all in the first half. 

Sophomore guard Jake Snyder (Akron/Archbishop Hoban) poured in a career-high tying 18 points for the second straight night, including knocking down the school-record 19th three-pointer of the game.  Freshman guard Luke Driscoll (Carmel, Calif./Stevenson School) chipped in a career-high tying 10 points.   Junior guard Shane Zalba (Mentor) dished out a career-high and game-high 10 assists.   Sophomore forward Jackson Simmons (Wadsworth) grabbed a game-high in rebounds for the second straight night as reeled in eight.

John Carroll (1-2, 12-2 OAC) was led by senior All-OAC guard Jackson Sartain as he scored a career-high tying and game-high 30 points.

It was all Yellow Jackets in the first half as they shot 54.5 percent from the field and 65 percent from three-point land, including knocking down 13 from beyond the arc.  BW took the early lead of 20-9 lead on a Mazzeo three-pointer at the 14:02 mark.  The Yellow Jackets extended its lead to 32-17 on a Snyder triple at 9:59.  BW pushed the lead to as many as 22 points, which was the most by either team on the weekend, when Mazzeo buried a three at the 1:35 mark.  The Yellow Jackets led 54-36 at the half.

The Blue Streaks opened the second half on a 10-5 run to cut the lead down to 59-46 on a layup by Hugh Brown at the 15:40 mark. BW used a 14-0 run to take an 81-58 lead on a Zalba layup at 8:00.  John Carroll closed the game on a 20-9 run to make the final score of 90-78.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Friday, February 12 when they hosts the first game of the OAC home-and-home weekend series against Capital University.
