Men’s Basketball Falls to Capital in Game One of Weekend Series

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team was defeated by Capital University in the first game of the Ohio Athletic Conference home-and-home series by a final score of 88-79 in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.

BW (2-5, 2-5 OAC) had four players score in double figures led by sophomore guard Anthony Mazzeo (North Canton/Massillon Jackson) as he scored a game-high 22 points.  Sophomore guard Jake Snyder (Akron/Archbishop Hoban) tallied 15 points and grabbed a career-high tying six rebounds. Freshman guard Drew Wennes (Huron) scored 14 points while freshman forward Christian Pfeiffer (Amherst) contributed a career-high 13 points, blocked a career-best five shots and dished out a career-high three assists.

Capital (3-4, 3-4 OAC) had three players score in double digits led by freshman guard Carter Combs as he scored 20 points.  Senior forward Reed Bradfield tallied 17 points and senior center Keandre Graves chipped in 15.

In the first half, the Yellow Jackets took a 33-17 lead on a layup by freshman forward Rob Watson III (Nordonia) at the 9:03 mark.   Capital closed out the opening period on a 17-3 run to cut the lead down to 36-34 on a Joe Hartmann layup as time expired. 

In a back and forth game in the second half, the game was tied on nine occasions with the last coming at 59-59.   Capital got a little momentum and took a 71-65 on a layup by Tyler Schreck with 5:31 remaining.  BW responded with an 9-0 run to take a 74-71 lead on the traditional three-point by play by Pfeiffer at 4:12 mark.  Capital closed the game on a 17-5 run to secure the win.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, February 13 when it travels to Bexley for the final game of the OAC home-and-home series against Capital University in Performance Arena inside the Capital Center at 6 p.m.
