Baldwin-Wallace College Football Players Matt Bowen and Kevin Johnson Named OAC Players of the Week

BEREA, OHIO -- Two Baldwin-Wallace College football student-athletes, junior defensive back Matt Bowen (Tiffin/Columbian) and freshman defensive back/kick returner Kevin Johnson (Garfield Heights/St. Ignatius), have been named Ohio Athletic Conference players of the week for their efforts in last Saturday's 35-34 victory against Otterbein University at The George Finnie Stadium in Berea on Homecoming on Saturday October 9.

Bowen is this week's OAC Defensive Player of the Week. In the second quarter against Otterbein, Bowenintercepted a Cardinal pass and returned it 88 yards for a touchdown. Bowen's return for a TD was the second longest in Finnie Stadium history and it marked the second straight game that he returned an interception for a TD. He also had a 24-yard 'pick six' against Marietta on October 2.  Bowen also made five tackles and was credited with a pass breakup against Otterbein.

For the season, Bowen ranks fourth on the Yellow Jackets with 32 total tackles, including 18 solo. He has three tackles for loss and leads the squad with eight pass breakups.

Johnson, this week's OAC Special Teams Player of the Week, returned three kickoffs for 135 yards to establish a Finnie Stadium record, including a second quarter 94-yard return for a TD that tied another Finnie Stadium record.  His 135-yard, three-return effort eclipsed the previous mark of 126 yards by All-American Chuck Geiss in 1989 and his 94-yard return tied B-W Hall of Famer Larry Mills' Finnie Stadium mark that was established in 1979 versus, ironically, Otterbein. For his efforts, Johnson was selected as the Frank Roppolo Homecoming Player of the Game.

For the season, he is averaging 37.9 yards in eight returns. On defense, Johnson has played in all five games for the 5-0 overall Yellow Jackets and has four tackles and a pass breakup.

This week, B-W, tied for first place in the Ohio Athletic Conference with No.2-ranked the University of Mount Union, travels to Ada, Ohio for another important OAC game at No.13-ranked Ohio Northern University at 1:30 p.m.  B-W next plays at home on Saturday, Oct. 23 when it hosts Wilmington College on Professor Appreciation Day at 1:30 p.m. In addition that day, the College will honor its OAC-champion and undefeated regular season team of 1980 which includes Mills.
