GRANVILLE, Ohio – The 25th-ranked Baldwin Wallace University baseball team could not erase an early deficit, falling 13-7 in non-conference action to Denison University at the Big Red Baseball Field.

BW (15-7 overall) held a 1-0 lead after the top of the first inning when sophomore third baseman Jacob Bonner (Akron/Archbishop Hoban) singled through the right side and came around to score on a double by senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference right fielder Alex Marcum (Granville). However, Denison (12-6) would strike back with a run in the bottom of the first and the game would remain tied at 1-1 until the fourth inning when the Big Red bats really started swinging.

Denison would add four runs in the fourth and five runs in the fifth for an 11-1 lead before sophomore left fielder Dudley Taw (Sheffield Lake/Brookside) hammered his OAC-leading sixth home run of the season, a two-run blast that would bring BW within eight runs at 11-3. The Big Red got one of those runs back in the bottom of the sixth to take a 12-3 lead but the Yellow Jackets would continue to chip away at the lead when Bonner hit a two-run single in the seventh, making the score 12-5. After Denison added an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh, freshman second baseman Tony LoParo (Avon/Elyria Catholic) knocked in two runs with a single to right center as BW trailed 13-7, a score that would hold up until the end of the game.

Bonner, Marcum and freshman shortstop Alex Ludwick (Brunswick/Padua Franciscan) each had two hits on the afternoon as the Yellow Jackets scattered seven runs on 11 hits.

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Max Adams (Massillon/Washington) suffers the loss as he went two batters into the second inning, giving up two runs on two hits and two walks with two strikeouts. Notable relief appearances came from senior left-handed pitcher Chad Kuebler (Toledo/Central Catholic) and freshman righty Nick Smith (Mentor) as they combined for three scoreless innings on two hits and one walk.

BW will return to OAC action on Friday, April 6, when the Yellow Jackets host Wilmington College for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Originally, the two teams were scheduled to play on Saturday, April 7, but the games have been moved up due to a better predicted weather forecast for Friday.
