Yellow Jackets Finish Weekend 2-2 at Salisbury (Md.) Seagull Classic

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College volleyball team split a pair of matches today (Saturday, September 18, 2010) at the Salisbury University Seagull Classic in Salisbury, Maryland.  The Yellow Jackets, 11-5 overall following the split, finished the two-day tournament with a 2-2 record.  For her efforts in the two-day event, sophomore Rachel Switalski (North Royalton/Holy Name) was named to the all-tournament team.

In addition, senior setter Casey Passen (Ashville/Teays Valley) went over the 3,000 mark in career set assists and now has 3,008. Passen is just 16 set assists shy of third place all-time in B-W history.

Today, B-W lost to No. 10-ranked Eastern (Pa.) University, 3-0, and by the scores of 25-20, 25-11 and 25-12. That loss dropped BW into the consolation match where it defeated Galludet (Washington D.C.) University, 3-0, for the second time in two days and this time by the scores of 25-16, 25-23 and 25-17.

In the first match against Eastern, freshmen defensive specialist Taylor Burns (Tiffin/ Fostoria St. Wendelin) led the way with six kills. She also had 10 defensive digs and a block. In addition, freshman hitter Colleen Bonacci (Stow/ Stow-Munroe Falls) had four kills. Passen  topped the team with 13 set assists and was second with 12 digs. Defensively, sophomore libero Natalie Emmons (Ashland/ Senior) led the way with 18 digs and freshman defensive specialist Shannon Deleur (Olmsted Falls) had 10 kills.

In the match versus Galludet, junior outside hitter Chelsea Nissen (Williston/ Genoa) led the way with nine kills and was followed by Deleur with eight, Switalski with seven and Bonacci had six. In addition, Switalski also led with three block assists and had four digs. Passen against paced the offense with 29 set assists and was tied with Emmons and Burns for the most digs with 15. Deleur also had 13.


Berea next plays on Wednesday, Sept. 22 when it travels to Hiram, Ohio to play traditional rival Hiram College at 7:00 p.m. Next weekend, Friday and Saturday, September 24-25, B-W travels to Cincinnati, Ohio to participate in the College of Mount St. Joseph Tournament. The next home match is Thursday, September 30 when the Tellow Jackets host NCAA Division II Notre Dame College of Ohio in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center at 7:00 p.m.
