Volleyball Team Splits a Pair of Matches on First Day of Kalamazoo Hornet Invite in Michigan

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College volleyball team split a pair of matches today (Friday, September 3, 2010) on the first day of the Kalamazoo College Hornet Classic in Kalamazoo, Michigan.  The Yellow Jackets are now 2-2 overall and play a pair of matches tomorrow morning (Sept. 4) against Franklin (Ind.) College at 10:00 a.m. and Olivet (Mich.) College at 12:00 noon.

In today's first match, B-W lost to the host school, 3-0, and by the scores of 26-24, 25-16 and 25-21. The Yellow Jackets then came back from a 2-1 deficit to claim a 3-2 victory against Anderson (Ind.) University in the nightcap and by the scores of 25-14, 23-25, 17-25, 25-18 and 15-9.


Against Kalamazoo on the front line, senior Abbey Thompson (Lorain/ Clearview) led the way with nine kills and freshman Colleen Bonacci (Stow/ Stow-Munroe Falls) led the way with three blocks.  Offensively, senior setter Casey Passen (Ashville/ Teays Valley) had a team-high 15 set assists. Defensively, sophomore libero Natalie Emmons (Ashland/ Senior) had a game-high 30 digs and junior defensive specialist Amanda Mass (North Royalton) had 10.


In the win versus Anderson, Bonnacci paced the squad with 14 kills and freshman Taylor Burns (Tiffin/ St. Wendelin) had 11. In addition, sophomore Rachel Switalski (North Royalton/ Holy Name) had the most blocks with four, including two solo.  Offensively, sophomore setter Jessica Stitts (Eastlake/ North) had 23 assists and Passen had 16. Defensively, Emmons again led the way with 27 digs and was joined in double figures by Passen and Burns each with 18 and freshman Shannon Deleur (Olmsted Falls) had 11.


Following its two matches tomorrow, the Yellow Jackets will return home and be back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 8 when they travel to Oberlin, Ohio to play Oberlin College in the Phillips Gymnasium at 7:00 p.m.  Next Saturday, Sept. 10-11, B-W will host the Annual Marcia French Memorial Tournament in Berea. Matches on Friday are at 4:00 versus Fransiscan University and at 7:00 p.m. versus The College of Wooster.  On Saturday, BW plays at 10:00 a.m. against Earlham (Ind.) College and at 1:00 p.m. versus Oberlin College.
