Jackets Split a Pair of Matches on Day One of Salisbury (Md.) Seagull Classic

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College volleyball team split a pair of matches tonight (Friday, September 17, 2010) at the Salisbury University Seagull Classic in Salisbury, Maryland.  The Yellow Jackets, 10-4 overall following the split, will play a pair of matches again tomorrow as they face No. 10-ranked Eastern (Pa.) University at 10:00 a.m. and then play in the playoff/consolation match at 12:00 noon.

In the first match, B-W defeated Gallaudet (Wash. D.C.), 3-0, and by the scores of 25-20, 25-20 and 25-21.  The Jackets ended their first day of play with a 3-0 loss to the host school and by the scores of 25-15, 25-18 and 26-24. B-W has now won nine of its last 11 matches.

In the match against Salisbury, freshmen hitters Colleen Bonacci (Stow/ Stow-Munroe Falls) and Shannon Deleur (Olmsted Falls) tied for the team-lead with eight kills and sophomore Rachel Switalski (North Royalton/ Holy Name) had five. Bonacci and Deleur each had two solo blocks to pace the squad. Senior setter Casey Passen (Ashville/ Teays Valley) topped the team with 24 set assists and tied junior outside hitter Chelsea Nissen (Williston/ Genoa) for the most service aces with two. Defensively, sophomore libero Natalie Emmons (Ashland/ Senior) led the way with 15 digs, while freshman defensive specialist Taylor Burns (Tiffin/ Fostoria St. Wendelin) had 12 and Deleur and Nissen added six each.

In the match versus Gallaudet, Switalski led all hitters with 10 kills and a .348 hitting percentage and Bonacci had nine with a .364 hitting percentage. In addition, Deleur had five and Passen four. Switalski also led with five total blocks, including three solos and Bonacci had two. Passen against paced the offense with 20 set assists and was second with 11 digs. The defense was led by Emmons' 13 digs and Deleur had 10.

Following its trip to Salisbury, B-W returns to Berea and plays next on Wednesday, Sept. 22 when it travels to Hiram, Ohio to play traditional rival Hiram College at 7:00 p.m. Next weekend, Friday and Saturday, September 24-25, B-W travels to Cincinnati, Ohio to participate in the HCAC/OAC Challenge hosted by College of Mount St. Joseph  The next home match is Thursday, September 30 when the Tellow Jackets host NCAA Division II Notre Dame College of Ohio in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center at 7:00 p.m.
