Volleyball Team Falls to Otterbein, 3-0, in Westerville; Defeats Allegheny, 3-2

BEREA, OHIO --The Baldwin-Wallace College volleyball team lost to Ohio Athletic Conference rival Otterbein University, 3-0, today (Saturday, October 9, 2010) at the Rike Center in Westerville.  However, B-W came back to beat Allegheny (Pa.) College, 3-2, in a non-league contest in their second match of the day.

B-W lost to Otterbein by the scores of 25-22, 25-17 and 25-20 to end a four-game winning streak. But, the Jackets defeated Allegheny, 20-25, 16-25, 25-23, 25-20 and 15-12. With the split, BW is now 17-9 overall and 2-1 in the OAC. B-W is now 6-0 in five set matches.
 
On the front line against Otterbein, freshman outside hitter Shannon Deleur (Olmsted Falls) lead the Yellow Jackets with 10 kills, a .474 hitting percentage, two service aces, and had 10 digs. In addition, sophomore Rachel Switalski (North Royalton/ Holy Name) and junior Chelsea Nissen (Williston/Genoa) each had six kills.

Setting the offense versus the Cards was sophomore setter Jessica Stitts (Eastlake/North) who lead the team with 14 set assists and tied for a team-high with two blocks. Also, senior setter Casey Passen (Ashville/ Teays Valley) had 12 set assists and six digs. The defense was led by sophomore libero Natalie Emmons (Ashland/ Senior) with 22 digs and freshman Taylor Burns (Tiffin/Fostoria St. Wendlin) with 10 digs.

Against Allegheny, Nissen had 11 kills and Burns contributed 10 kills and17 digs. Switalski added eight kills, five blocks and seven digs and Deleur had seven kills and eight digs. Stitts had 21 set assists and Passen added 19. Emmons led the way with 36 digs on defense.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Tuesday, October 12 when they host OAC-rival and nationally-ranked Heidelberg University in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center in Berea at 7:00 p.m. B-W also is home on Saturday, Oct. 16 to play OAC-rival and nationally-ranked Ohio Northern University at 1:30 p.m. on 'Dig It for the Cure' Day. All fans are asked to please wear pink that day.
