BUFFALO, N.Y. – Two strong attacking teams went head-to-head in the first game of the Bengals Classic with the Baldwin Wallace University women's soccer team falling to Rutgers University-Newark (N.J.) 2-1 in the first minute of overtime.

Both teams started attacking each other's defense as soon as the whistle blew, taking seven shots in the first 17 minutes of the game before one of those balls found the back of the net.

Junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC standout forward Rachel Bender (Massillon/Jackson) scored her second goal of the season from six yards out off a corner kick from senior All-OAC forward Courtney Schutz (Mentor), giving Schutz her second assist of the season. The ball was initially touched off the corner kick but Bender didn't give up on the ball, instead spinning and hitting it into the upper corner of the net.

BW (2-2) continued to create chances at goal, getting two good looks in the 68th minute to take a possible 2-0 lead but sent those balls high and wide. Instead, Rutgers-Newark (4-1) evened up the score at 1-1 with a penalty kick goal in the 70th minute, marking the end of sophomore goalkeeper Emma Bruno's (Bethel Park, Pa.) streak of 205 consecutive minutes without allowing a goal to start the season.

Playing well in transition, the Scarlet Raiders kept up the offensive pressure, sending 21 total shots toward Bruno's way. However, the Yellow Jackets were able to reestablish a little rhythm and took two shots in the final minute of regulation with one of them being blocked and one of them flying wide.

At the start of overtime, Rutgers-Newark quickly gained possession and scored the game-winning goal from 15 yards away in the 91st minute.

BW will try to make its way back into the win column when it takes on host Buffalo State (N.Y.) College in the final game of the Bengals Classic on Sunday, September 10, at 1 p.m.
