Women’s Soccer Falls to Host Buffalo St. in Final Game of Bengals Classic

BUFFALO, N.Y. – In the final day of the Bengals Classic, the Baldwin Wallace University women's soccer team were shut out by host Buffalo State (N.Y.) College 2-0.

While the Yellow Jackets (2-3) took 14 shots on the afternoon, seven of them on goal, they were unable to capitalize on any of those scoring opportunities. Meanwhile, the Bengals (1-2-1) made the most of their chances despite only taking five shots and two on goal, netting those two shots.

Buffalo State senior forward Lindsay Mahoney knocked in the Bengals first goal off a rebound from another shot while, nine minutes later, senior midfielder Victoria Colotti added to the lead with a header off a free kick from teammate Breanna Knight. After giving up the second goal, the Yellow Jacket defense locked down, controlled the rhythm, kept the ball in front of them and did not allow a single shot on goal for the rest of the game.

Junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC forward Rachel Bender (Massillon/Jackson) had the Yellow Jackets best scoring opportunity of the afternoon when she was awarded a penalty kick in the 13th minute. However, senior goalkeeper Nicole Torres saved the penalty kick, the first of her seven saves, en route to the eventual shutout.

In the locker room at halftime, BW made some adjustments opened up the second half with a series of shots from Bender and senior All-OAC midfielder Alex Elliott (Blacklick/IMG Academy). Both Bender and Elliott worked hard in the attacking third to create those scoring chances but could not finish the shots.

After playing five games in the span of eight days, the Yellow Jackets are looking forward to the chance to relax and heal from the kind of nagging injuries that are typical from so much play, which gave some of freshmen the opportunity to step up, play some valuable minutes and gain on-the-field experience this weekend.

BW will host crosstown rival and non-conference foe Case Western Reserve University in the team's home opener on Wednesday, September 13, at 7 p.m. inside George Finnie Stadium.
