WASHINGTON, Pa.–The Baldwin Wallace University men's lacrosse team opened the 2018 season as it defeated Washington & Jefferson College by a final score of 26-1 inside Alexandre Stadium.

The victory marked the first collegiate and BW victory for Head Coach Trey Keeley.  The 26 goals marked the most goals scored in a season-opener in school history.

"Proud of the way we competed today, stated Keeley.  "We have a lot of work to do, as most teams this time of year, but I was proud of how we brought energy and effort throughout the game. We struggled to execute at times with our stickwork and team defensive schemes, but I think that will come if we continue to focus on the little things."

BW (1-0), who allowed only one goal for the fifth time in school history, improved to 4-0 all-time vs. Washington & Jefferson (0-2), including 3-0 in season-openers vs the Presidents.  The Yellow Jackets are now 5-1 all-time to start the season. 

BW was led by junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference attack Chad Steinwachs (Buffalo, N.Y./Williamsville North) as he scored a career-high and school-record seven goals and added two assists for a career-best nine points.  Sophomore midfielder Ben Kubiak (Wooster) recorded a career-best four goals and career-high three assists for a career-best seven points. Junior Mike Nanosky (Medina) scored a career-high tying four goals and added one assist for five points.  Senior All-OAC attack Brock Riemenschneider (Rocky River) tallied three goals and a career-high tying three assists for six points. Senior All-OAC midfielder Matt McDowell (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) recorded three goals.  Senior All-OAC midfielder Derek Andrews (Alden, N.Y./Iroquois) contributed two goals.

In net for the Yellow Jackets, senior All-OAC netminder Mike Dizonno (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) picked up his 36th career win as he allowed one goal on 11 shots with eight saves.

Washington and Jefferson got its lone goal from Mark Mandak.

In the first quarter, BW scored all six goals.  Steinwachs led the way with two goals with the last coming at the 3:32 mark.   The Yellow Jackets got their other four goals from sophomore midfielder Riley Mahon (Palatine, Ill./William Fremd , McDowell, Mike Nanosky and Riemenschneider with the Mike Nanosky goal closing out the quarter scoring with 1:24 remaining.

BW added five more goals in the second quarter led by Steinwachs as he scored the final two goals of the period with his last coming at the 5:50 mark.   The Yellow Jackets got their other three goals from McDowell, Mike Nanosky on a man-down and Kubiak. 

In the third quarter, BW scored six more goals led by Riemenschneider with two goals with the last coming at 12:51.  The Yellow Jackets added four goals from Derek Andrews Kubiak, McDowell and Steinwachs.

The Presidents opened the fourth quarter scoring when Mandak scored the unassisted goal at the 14:17 mark.  BW closed out the scoring as it got two goals from Kubiak and Steinwachs along with one goal each from sophomore midfielder Hunter Lute (North Canton), McDowell, Andrews, Mike Nanosky and sophomore attack Justin Presutti (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South). The Yellow Jackets got their final goal when Presutti scored at 2:20.

BW is back in action on Saturday, February 24 when it travels to Olivet, Michigan for a non-conference game against Olivet College inside the Cutler Athletic Complex at 2 p.m.
