Men’s Lacrosse Wins Home Opener with Defeat of Alma (Mich.)

BEREA, Ohio -- The Baldwin Wallace University men's lacrosse defeated Alma (Mich.) College in its home opener by a final score of 12-5 on the Tressel Field inside the George Finnie Stadium. 

BW (4-2) led Alma (1-5) by a score of 4-2 after the first quarter.  The Yellow Jackets held a 2-1 advantage in the second period to lead 6-3 at halftime.  BW shutout the Scots in the third quarter as it scored the only three goals to lead 9-3.  The Yellow Jackets outscored Alma by a margin of 3-2 in the final quarter to secure the 15-2 victory.

BW was led by sophomore midfielder Ben Kubiak (Wooster) as he scored a game-high and career-best tying four goals.  Junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference attack Mike Nanosky (Medina) chipped in two goals and added one assist.  Six other Yellow Jackets tallied one goal each.

In net for the Yellow Jackets, senior All-OAC goalie Mike Dizonno (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) earned the victory as he allowed five goals with 11 saves.  Junior netminder Nate Karatas (Penfield, N.Y.) played the final three minutes and did not allow a goal with one save. 

In the first quarter, BW opened the game on a 2-0 run as it got goals from Kubiak and sophomore midfielder Hunter Lute (North Canton) with the last coming at the 9:06 mark.  After a Scot goal, the Yellow Jackets got another goal from Kubiak on the man-up at 3:50.  Alma scored its final goal of the quarter at the 2:25 mark.  BW closed out the opening period scoring when Mike Nanosky scored with eight seconds remaining.

The Yellow Jackets opened the second quarter scoring when Mike Nanosky scored the man-up goal to extend the lead to 5-2 at the 12:02 mark.  The Scots cut the lead down to 5-3 at 10:13. BW closed out the first half scoring when senior All-OAC attack Brock Riemenschneider (Rocky River) found the back of the cage of the assist from Mike Nanosky at the 2:41 mark.

The Yellow Jackets scored all three goals of the third quarter as they got tallies from Kubiak, freshman midfielder Nicholas Nanosky (Medina) and senior All-OAC midfielder Matt McDowell (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) with the last coming at the 3:32 mark.

In the fourth quarter, BW opened the scoring when freshman attack Ethan Miller (Delaware/Hayes) scored the unassisted goal at the 12:59 mark.  Alma cut the lead down to 10-4 at 9:22. The Yellow Jackets scored their final two goals of the game as it got scores from Kubiak and senior midfielder Alex Binner (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) with the last coming at the 6:34 mark.   The Scots closed out the scoring at 1:33 to make the score 12-5.

BW returns to action on Friday, March 23 when it travels to New Concord for its OAC opener against Muskingum University inside McConagha Stadium at 7 p.m.
