Men’s Lacrosse Defeats Mount Union in Regular Season Finale, Qualifies for OAC Tournament

BEREA, Ohio –  The Baldwin Wallace University men's lacrosse team closed out the regular season portion of its schedule with a 19-10 Ohio Athletic Conference victory over the University of Mount Union on the Tressel Field inside the George Finnie Stadium. 

BW (10-4, 6-2 OAC) advances to the OAC Tournament for the fifth straight season.  The Yellow Jackets will now have to wait until the conclusion of the OAC regular season on Saturday, April 28 to determine the road location of their game in semifinals on Wednesday, May 2 at 7 p.m.  Mount Union (5-9, 2-5) misses out on postseason play for the fourth straight season.

The Yellow Jackets held a 9-2 lead after the first quarter.  BW outscored the Purple Raiders by a margin of 4-2 in the second quarter.  The Yellow Jackets and Mount Union each scored four goals in the third quarter.  BW and the Purple Raiders each scored two goals in the fourth quarter.

The Yellow Jackets were led by junior All-OAC attack Chad Steinwachs (Buffalo, N.Y./Williamsville North) and senior All-OAC attack Brock Riemenschneider (Rocky River) as the duo each scored four goals.  Steinwachs added a game-high six assists for eight total points and Riemenschneider added two assists for six points. Senior Academic All-OAC attack Alex Binner (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) and sophomore midfielder Ben Kubiak (Wooster)each chipped in three goals.

In net for BW, senior All-OAC goalie Mike Dizonno (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) won his 10th game of the season as he allowed 10 goals with 15 saves.

Mount Union was led by senior attack Brent Greenburg and freshman attack Alex Kungle each with three goals.  Freshman attack Paul Gill chipped in two goals

In the first quarter, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 6-0 lead as it got goals from Binner, Kubiak, junior All-OAC attack Mike Nanosky (Medina), freshman attack Ethan Miller (Delaware/Hayes), Riemenschneider and Steinwachs.   After a Purple Raider goal, BW ran off three unanswered goals as it got two tallies from Riemenschneider and one from Steinwachs with the last coming at 32 seconds left.   Mount Union scored the final goal of the quarter with 10 seconds remaining but trailed 9-2.

The Purple Raiders cut the lead down to 9-3 on a goal from Kungle at the 10:42 mark of the second quarter.  The Yellow Jackets responded with a 4-0 run to extend the lead to 13-3 on two goals from Steinwachs and one each from Binner and Kubiak with the last coming at 5:01.  Mount Union closed out the first half scoring on a goal by freshman midfielder Jacob Dodd at the 4:53 mark but trailed 13-4 at the intermission.

The Purple Raiders opened the second half scoring and cut the lead down to 13-5 on a Kungle goal at the 13:49 mark.   BW answered with a 2-0 run to push its lead to 15-5 on goals from Binner and Reimenschneider at 9:20. Mount Union went on a 2-0 run to cut the lead down to 15-7.  The Yellow Jackets responded with a 2-0 run to push the lead back to 17-7 on goals from junior midfielder Thomas Moesch (Ithaca, N.Y.) and freshman midfielder Andrew Hodgens (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) with the last coming at the 1:28 mark.  The Purple Raiders closed out the third quarter scoring when Gill found the back of the cage with 41 seconds left. 

Mount Union opened the final quarter scoring to cut the lead down to 17-9 when Greenburg found the back of the cage at the 12:50 mark.   BW responded with a goal from freshman midfielder Gage Schneider (Hamburg, N.Y.) scored to extend the lead to 18-9 at 11:06.   The Purple Raiders got their final tally of the game on the score from freshman midfielder Thomas Ravlin at the 8:12 mark.   The Yellow Jackets closed out the scoring on the hat trick from Kubiak with 4:05 remaining.
