Fourth Quarter Explosion Nets Men’s Lacrosse Victory Over St. Vincent (Pa.)

LATROBE, PA. -- The Baldwin Wallace University men's lacrosse team exploded for a game-high and quarter-high six goals in the fourth quarter to earn a 14-10 victory over St. Vincent College in a non-conference game on Chuck Noll Field. 

BW (3-1) trailed St. Vincent (2-1) after the first quarter by a score of 3-1. The Yellow Jackets outscored the Bearcats 4-1 in the second stanza to head into the locker room tied at 5-5.  St. Vincent lead 9-8 after three quarters before BW used a 6-1 fourth quarter to secure the 14-10 victory.

The Yellow Jackets were led by senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference midfielder Matt McDowell (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) and junior All-OAC attack Mike Nanosky (Medina) as the duo each netted a career-high tying four goals.  Junior All-OAC attack Chad Steinwachs (Buffalo, N.Y./Williamsville North) rounded out the multiple goal scorers as he tallied three goals. Three other BW players added a score.

In net for the Yellow Jackets, senior All-OAC goalie Mike Dizonno (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) earned his third win of the season and his 38th career victory.  Dizonno allowed 10 goals as he faced 18 shots and made eight saves,

In the first quarter, the Bearcats took the early 1-0 lead at the 13:44 mark.  BW tied the game at 1-1 when sophomore midfielder Ben Kubiak (Wooster) scored the unassisted goal at 9:49.  St. Vincent scored the final two goals of the opening period with the last coming at the 2:03 mark.

The Yellow Jackets opened the second quarter on a 3-0 run to take a 4-3 as they got two goals from Mike Nanosky and one from Steinwachs with the second Mike Nanosky goal coming on the man-up off the assist from senior All-OAC midfielder Derek Andrews (Alden, N.Y./Iroquois) at the 6:42 mark.  The Bearcats responded with a 2-0 run to take a 5-4 lead at 1:01. BW tied the game at 5-5 with eight seconds left in the first half when McDowell found the back of the cage off the assist from Steinwachs.

BW scored the first goal of the second half to take a 6-5 lead on the unassisted goal by Steinwachs at the 14:41 mark.  St. Vincent answered with a 3-0 run to take an 8-6 lead at 4:54.   The Yellow Jackets cut the lead down to 8-7 on an unassisted goal by McDowell at the 3:38 mark.  The Bearcats scored their final goal of the third quarter with 1:34 remaining on the man-up.   BW closed out the third stanza scoring and cut the lead down to 9-8 when Mike Nanosky found the back of the cage off the assist from senior midfielder Alex Binner (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) with just eight seconds remaining.

The Yellow Jacket offense exploded for a game-high and quarter-high six goals while the defense allowed a game-low and quarter-low one goal in the final quarter.  BW started the final period on a 4-0 run as it got goals from Binner, Steinwachs, freshman midfielder Nicholas Nanosky (Medina), McDowell and Mike Nanosky with the last coming at the 7:25 mark.  St. Vincent got its final goal of the game at 5:42 to cut the lead down to 13-10.   The Yellow Jackets closed out the scoring when McDowell scored his fourth goal at the 3:23 mark.

BW is back in action on Wednesday, March 6 when it travels to Lexington, Kentucky for a non-conference game against Transylvania University in the 4th Street Athletics Complex at 6 p.m.   The Yellow Jackets open the home portion of their schedule on Saturday, March 10 when they host a non-conference game against Alma (Mich.) College on the Tressel Field inside the George Finnie Stadium at 2 p.m.
