Second Half Surge Propels Men’s Basketball to Victory Over St. Vincent (Pa.)

ORLANDO, Fla. –  The Baldwin Wallace University men's team defeated St. Vincent (Pa.) College in its opening game of the RDV Sportsplex D3 Classic hosted by Hope (Mich.) College by a final score of 77-60 in the RDV Sportsplex Athletic Club.

BW (7-2) had three players score in double figures led by senior All-OAC guard Cam Kuhn (Vermilion) and junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC guard Jay Battle (Gahanna/Lincoln) as each scored a game-high tying 21 points. Senior All-OAC forward Jake Fetherolf (Norwalk) chipped in 12 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.

With his 21 points, Kuhn moved into 10th on the all-time scoring list with 1,545 points and now needs 15 points to pass Hall of Famer Jason Schefft (1997-2001) in ninth place with 1,559 points.

St. Vincent (6-4), who went 0-2 during the classic, had two players score in double digits led by junior guard Mike Simmons as he scored 11 points.  Senior guard Jason Capco contributed 10 points.

The Yellow Jackets opened the first half on an 10-2 run when Kuhn scored on a layup at the 17:24 mark.  After a three-pointer by the Bearcats, BW used a 10-0 run to extend the lead to 20-5 on a layup by sophomore forward Drew Sova (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) at 13:34.  St. Vincent responded with a 21-8 run to cut the lead down to 28-26 on jumper by senior forward Tom Kromka at the 4:59 mark.   The Bearcats tied the game at 32-32 on a pair of free throws by Mike Simmons at 2:50. The Yellow Jackets hit the final basket of the first half to take a 35-34 lead into halftime when sophomore guard Michael Quiring (Brunswick) buried a triple with 1:03 remaining.

After the game was tied at 43-43, BW went on a 9-2 run to take a 52-45 lead on the reverse layup by Battle at the 11:06 mark.  St. Vincent responded with a 5-1 run to cut the lead down to 53-50 when Capco nailed a trey at 9:46. The Yellow Jackets closed out the game on a 24-10 run to secure the 77-60 victory.  BW got the final points of the game on a layup by Kuhn with one minute remaining. 

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Thursday, December 21 when they close out the RDV Sportsplex D3 Classic against Hope College at 7:30 p.m.  BW returns to the friendly confines of the Ursprung Gymnasium for just its second home game of the season when it hosts Bethany (W. Va.) College on Friday, December 29 at 6 p.m.
