Men’s Basketball Team Beats Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) in Season-Opener

WASHINGTON, Pennsylvania --  Sophomore forward Jake Fetherolf (Norwalk) had a double-double with 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team defeated host Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) College, 79-60, in its 2015-2016 season-opener inside Henry Memorial Center. 

The Yellow Jackets (1-0) had five players in double figures in a balanced scoring effort.

Joining Fetherolf in double figures were sophomore All-Ohio Athletic Conference guard Cam Kuhn (Vermilion) had 13 points, freshman guard Michael Peters (Cuyahoga Falls/ Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) had 12 points all on three-pointers, junior forward Jaelen Hollinger (Akron/ Hoban) had 12 points and senior guard Brandon Gleim (Hilliard/Davidson) had 10 points.  Washington & Jefferson (0-1) was led by sophomore guard Brian Graytok with 10 points. BW outscored the Presidents 33-9 from three-point range and outrebounded them, 38-29.

In the first half, W&J opened the scoring at 19:23 to take a 2-0 lead, but the Yellow Jackets ran off 10 straight points to take a 12-2 lead at 14:15 when Gleim made a jump shot. The Presidents got as close as four points in the first stanza on two separate occassions with the last at 26-22 with 4:23 remaining. BW scored the next nine points, including four by Hollinger, to take a 35-22 lead with 2:40 left. BW also gained a 39-30 halftime lead when Fetherolf grabbed a rebound off of a missed Yellow Jacket shot and slammed it home at the buzzer.

In the second half, BW built a 12-point lead at 49-37 at 16:08 when sophomore Michael Kaminski (Medina) canned a three-pointer. W&J again came back and got as close as four points at 41-37 with 18:27 remaining, but another 8-0 BW run moved the lead to 12 points at 49-37 at 16:08 when Kaminski canned another triple. The largest lead was 26 points at 79-53 with 1:50 left when senior guard Zach Warner (Clyde) made a trey.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action this Tuesday, November 17 when BW hosts a home women's and men's doubleheader versus Case Western Reserve University in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center in Berea. The women's game tips off at 6 p.m. and the men's game is scheduled for an 8 p.m. start.
