Men’s Basketball Loses to North Park) (Ill.) at Defiance Tourney

DEFIANCE, Ohio --  Sophomore All-Ohio Athletic Conference guard Cam Kuhn (Vermilion) scored 23 points but the Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team lost to North Park (Ill.) University, 96-83, in the first round of the Defiance College Bankers Financial Tournament.

With its loss, the Yellow Jackets fall to 7-4 overall and play the loser of tonight's nightcap between host Defiance (7-3) and Albion, Michigan College in tomorrow's consolation game at 5 p.m.

In addition to Kuhn for BW, sophomore forward Mike Kaminski (Medina) had 17 points and six rebounds and junior guard Zack Brandy (Hudson) came off the bench to score 11. Three players led North Park (7-3) with a combined 82 of its 96 points, including 32 points and 11 rebounds by Jordan Robinson and 29 points and 10 assists by Juwan Henry.

In the first half, BW jumped out to a 5-2 lead at 18:17 when sophomore forward Jake Fetherolf (Norwalk) made a jump shot. After four lead changes and a tie, the Yellow Jackets gained their largest advantage at 17-10 at 12:14 when freshman guard Michael Peters (Cuyahoga Falls/ CVCA) canned a three-pointer.

North Park then outscored BW by 21 points during the next nine minutes to build a 40-26 lead at 3:17 when Robinson scored on a layup, was fouled and completed the three-point play when he made his foul shot. Undaunted, BW scored 12 of the final 15 points, all on three-point plays, including three conventional, and trailed 43-38 when Kuhn made a trey with 1:18 left. The score remained that way at halftime.

In the second half, BW again cut the North Park lead to five points at 45-40 at 19:08 when Fetherolf made a layup. North Park went on a 22-10 run to build its first of two 17-point leads at 67-50 with 11:11 left.

The closest BW would get after that point was eight points at 8:08 when Kaminski made two foul shots to make it 71-63.

Following tomorrow's consolation game, BW next plays on Saturday, January 9 when they travel to Columbus and resume Ohio Athletic Conference play against Capital University in the Capital Center at 2 p.m.
