BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team scored a season-high 97 points as it defeated Middlebury (Vt.) College, 97-87, in the first game of the Western New York Knee and Orthopedic Surgery Tournament hosted by Medaille College in the Sullivan Center.
BW (2-1) will face Medaille in tomorrow's championship game at 3 p.m. Middlebury (0-1) will face St. Lawrence (N.Y.) University in tomorrow's consolation game at 1 p.m.
The Yellow Jackets had six players score in double figures led by sophomore All-Ohio Athletic Conference guard Cam Kuhn (Vermilion) scored a team-high 19 points and grabbed a team-best tying and career-best tying six rebounds. Sophomore forward Mike Kaminski (Medina) tallied a career-high 17 points and grabbed a team-best tying and career-high six rebounds. Junior guard Zack Brandy (Hudson) and freshmen guards Jay Battle (Gahanna/Lincoln) and Michael Peters (Cuyahoga Falls /Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) all recorded 11 points. The 11 points for Battle was a career-best. Sophomore forward Jake Fetherolf (Norwalk) contributed 10 points and grabbed four rebounds.
The Panthers had three players score in double digits led by Matt St. Amour with a game-high 33 points. Jake Brown tallied 14 points and Matt Daley contributed 13 points.
In the early stages of the first half, the game was tied on three occasions with the last coming at 9-9 on a three-pointer by BW's Brandy at the 15:24 mark. The Panthers used a 9-3 run to take an 18-12 lead on trey from St. Amour at 12:40. The Yellow Jackets answered back with a 15-3 run to take a 27-21 lead on a three-pointer by senior forward Zach Warner (Clyde) at the 9:26 mark. BW outscored Middlebury by a slight margin of 16-15 down the stretch to lead 43-36 at the intermission.
The Yellow Jackets extended their lead to 11 points early in the second half at 60-49 on a jumper by Kuhn at the 14:36 mark. The Panthers responded with a 6-3 run to cut the lead down to 63-55 when St. Amour split a pair of free throws at 11:27. BW went on a 17-1 run to push its lead to a game-high 24 points at 80-56 on a layup by Peters at the 5:39 mark. Middlebury outscored the Yellow Jackets 31-17 over the remainder of the game but fell by a final score of 97-87.
After Saturday's championship game, the Yellow Jackets are back in action on Tuesday, November 24 when they host a non-conference game against Westminster (Pa.) College in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center at 7:30 p.m.
