More important to Bankson than the wins and losses were the relationships that he developd with current and former student-athletes and maintains today. A number of his former players have gone on to become outstanding high school and college coaches. Two prime examples were his successor at BW, Duane Sheldon '93, who had a 98-83 record in seven seasons at his alma mater, and current Brunswick High School Head Coach Joe Mackey '95, who is the winningest coach in school history.

In addition, Bankson served as an athletics director for 37 years, including all 28 at BW.

Bankson has been selected to three other Halls of Fame. He was inducted into the Elyria (Ohio) Sports Hall of Fame in 1997, the Port Huron (Michigan) Sports Hall of Fame in 2005 and the BW Alumni Athletic Association Hall of Fame in 2008.

An avid golfer with a single-digit handicap, Bankson resides in The Villages in Florida with his wife, Roselyn.  The Bankson's have three daughters and seven grandchildren.
