Men’s Basketball Team Seeks an Even Better Second Half of its Season

BEREA, Ohio -- The Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team had a strong first half of its 2015-2016 season when it compiled an 8-4 record under the direction of first-year Head Coach Tom Heil. It included a championship at the Medaille (N.Y.) College Tournament, a third place finish at the Defiance College Tournament and a 3-2 record in the rugged Ohio Athletic Conference. This Saturday, January 9, the Yellow Jackets return to OAC play when they travel to Columbus to play rival Capital University (7-3, 3-1 OAC) in the Capital Center at 2 p.m. BW is hoping for even better second half of its season.

Sophomore All-OAC guard Cam Kuhn (Vermilion) and sophomore forward Jake Fetherolf (Norwalk), an OAC all-tournament team selection as a freshman, have led the team.  Kuhn tops the OAC In scoring at 24.4 points-per-game and set a school single-game record with 51 points versus OAC rival University of Mount Union earlier this season. He also grabs 4.1 rpg., leads the team with 37 three-pointers and 12 steals and is second with 34 assists. Fetherolf tops the OAC in rebounding with 10.8 rpg., is second in scoring at 11.3 ppg. and tops the team by shooting 60.2 percent from the floor (56 of 93) and with 21 blocked shots.

Joining the duo in the starting lineup the past seven games have been freshman point guard Jay Battle (Gahanna/ Lincoln), who scores 8.1 ppg. and has a team-high 43 assists; junior forward Jaelen Hollinger (Akron/ Hoban), who scores 6.5 ppg. and is second with 4.3 rpg.; and sophomore Mike Kaminski (Medina), who scores 7.0 ppg., grabs 3.4 rpg. and is third with 21 three-pointers.

Heil, who crafted a 22-7 record last winter and led Defiance to a Heartland Conference title and an NCAA Division III playoff berth, also has a solid bench.  Plus, he hopes to get junior point guard Brandon Gleim (Hilliard/ Davidson) back soon.  Gleim started the first five games before an injury sidelined him the past seven contests. He was scoring 7.0 ppg.

Off the bench, look for junior point guard Zack Brandy (Hudson), who scores 8.2 ppg., grabs 2.7 rpg. and has 27 assists and 10 triples; freshman guard/ forward Michael Peters (Cuyahoga Falls/ CVCA), who scores 6.6 ppg., grabs 3.9 rpg. and has 10 treys; senior small forward Zach Warner (Clyde), who scores 6.2 ppg. and is second with 22 three-pointers; and senior forward Ryan Walsh (Easton, Pa./ Easton Area), who scores 2.3 ppg. and grabs 3.0 rpg.

Following its game at Capital this Saturday, BW returns home and hosts OAC rival Heidelberg University on Wednesday, Jan. 13 in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center at 7:30 p.m.
