ERIE, Pa. – The Baldwin Wallace University men's soccer team dominated possession in its season-opening game but ultimately fell 2-1 to Geneseo (N.Y.) in the first game of the Herb Lauffer Memorial Tournament hosted by Penn State Behrend College.

BW came out aggressive in the first half and controlled the ball, getting sophomore All-Ohio Athletic Conference forward Danny Ruple (Berea/Berea-Midpark) a good look at goal at the 5:17 mark in the first half which did not find the back of the net.

Geneseo would then take three shots in seven minutes before scoring a counterattack goal 12:58 into the game. The Knights would carry that 1-0 lead into the locker room at half time.

Coming out in the second half, senior goalkeeper Ryan Asbury (Cincinnati/Turpin) made two of his six total saves in the first 11 minutes of the second half to give his team a chance to tie up the score.

At the 58:21 mark, sophomore midfielder Joey Geither (Parma/Normandy) scored the Yellow Jackets first goal of the season and first career collegiate goal with a side volley off a cross by sophomore midfielder Timmy Jonas (Fairview Park/St. Edward) and a flick header by Ruple. Both Jonas and Ruple were credited with an assist, the first of the season for both players.

However, the tie was short-lived as Geneseo took a 2-1 lead just two minutes after the Geither goal, a lead which the Knights would not relinquish despite five shots made by the Yellow Jackets.

BW will be back in action against DeSales University in the consolation game of the Herb Lauffer Memorial Tournament on Sunday, September 3, at 12 p.m.
