Deighton’s Two Goals Lift BW in 2-1 Win Over ONU

BEREA, Ohio -- Senior midfielder Ben Deighton (Richfield/Revere) scored a pair of goals as the Baldwin Wallace University men's soccer team overcame a 1-0 first half deficit to beat Ohio Athletic Conference foe Ohio Northern University, 2-1, on Tuesday evening on Tressel Field inside The George Finnie Stadium.

ONU (11-7-1, 4-3-1 OAC) gained a 1-0 lead when a free kick by junior defender Chase Mueller from about half field was knocked in for an own goal off of a BW defender at the 14:42 mark. BW (8-10-1, 4-3-1 OAC) tied the match at 1-1 at 23:11 when Deighton netted his fourth goal of the season with a volley goal into the right side of the goal off of a cross pass from the left side by freshman defender David Elsen (Cleves/Cincinnati St.Xavier). The score remained tied at halftime. The Yellow Jackets attempted five first half shots, including three on goal.

In the second half, the Yellow Jackets took a 2-1 lead when Deighton scored the game-winner when he headed his fifth goal of the season at the 68:42 mark off a cross pass from the right side by senior Academic All-OAC midfielder Michael Brennan (Akron/Walsh Jesuit).

Overall, BW had 14 shots, including seven on goal. Junior goalkeeper Zach Haynes (Medina) saved seven shots and earned his second victory of the season.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action for their final regular season match this Saturday, November 1 when they host Capital University at 7 p.m. on Seniors' and Parents' Night.

The 2014 OAC Tournament begins on Monday, Nov. 3, with the semifinal matches set for Wednesday, Nov. 5 and the championship match is Saturday, Nov. 8. Times are yet to be announced.
