COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Baldwin Wallace University men's lacrosse team opened its pair of spring break trip games in Colorado Springs with a 11-5 loss to Haverford (Pa.) College on the neutral site of Colorado College's Washburn Field.
With the loss, BW (2-3) drops its first ever contest against Haverford (1-5).
The Yellow Jackets' offense was led by senior attacker Drew Braden (Wooster) and junior midfielder Nick Nanosky (Medina), who combined to score all five of BW's goals, with Braden netting a hat-trick and Nanosky recording two.
Yellow Jackets freshman goalkeeper Joe Storner (Louisville, Ky./St. Xavier) made 13 saves on 21 total shots faced, as he saw his record drop to 2-2 on the year. Junior goalkeeper Trent Davis also saw some action in the cage for BW, having logged in 7:10 of playing time and stopping one of four shots encountered.
The unfamiliar foes used the first several minutes of the game to feel the game out, until Haverford struck first, scoring at the 11:43 mark. The Fords were then able to tack on another two goals in a 44-second span towards the end of the first quarter to increase their lead to 3-0. Hoping to not let the game slip away from them early on, BW managed to cut the deficit to two, courtesy of Braden's goal with 1:20 remaining in the first period.
The Yellow Jackets' Nanosky got the second quarter scoring started, finding the back of the net just 1:02 into the frame. Sensing a momentum swing, Haverford responded with consecutive scores at the 6:56 and 4:52 marks, respectively, regaining its three-goal cushion. Nanosky then potted his second goal of the game with two minutes remaining before the intermission.
Down by two goals, and struggling to generate any offense, BW surrendered another three-goal run to the Fords and failed to score itself despite sending four shots on net in the third period. The Yellow Jackets would need to deal with a five-goal difference, heading into the final quarter of regulation.
BW's rough second half spilled into fourth period, as Haverford's three goals from 5:56 to 3:39 extended its run to six straight scores. Despite another two tucks from the Yellow Jackets' Braden in the final 2:19 to complete the hat-trick, BW's hole proved to be to deep to climb out of, as time expired.
The Yellow Jackets return to action on Thursday, March 12, when they compete against Colorado College for their final spring break trip game on Washburn Field at 3:00 p.m.
