Bower’s Record Night Helps Men’s Lacrosse Cage the Bearcats

BEREA, Ohio- Senior attack Blake Bower's (Lewis Center/Olentangy) record night helped the Baldwin Wallace University men's lacrosse team defeat St. Vincent College (Pa.) by a score of 21-6 on Tressel Field inside George Finnie Stadium.

BW (2-0) was led by Bower, who scored a school-record eight goals and tied a school-record by registering 11 points. Junior attack Drew Braden (Wooster) scored his first three goals as a Yellow Jacket and the trio of senior All-OAC attack Mike Nanosky (Medina), freshman midfielder John Schulte (Grosse Pointe, Mich./South) and junior attack Justin Presutti (Williamsville, N.Y./South) all found the back of the net twice. Senior All-OAC attack Chad Steinwachs (Buffalo, N.Y./Williamsville North) dished out a game-high six assists in the win.

St. Vincent (0-2) was led by sophomore midfielder Danny Tare and senior attack Jeremy Kennedy, who both scored two goals. Senior midfielder Joe Puvel and junior defender Tyler Sosnak each registered a goal.

The Yellow Jackets controlled the first period from the get-go on both sides of the field. BW outscored St. Vincent 5-0, while holding the Bearcats to only four shots for the first 15 minutes of play. The scoring parade was started by an unassisted goal by junior midfielder Riley Mahon (Palatine, Ill./William Fremd) and continued with two goals by Bower, including one man-up score. Senior defender Brian Jandzinski (Lancaster, N.Y./Central) and senior All-OAC attack Mike Nanosky (Medina) also found the back of the net for their first goals of the season.

BW kept it going into the second quarter after Nanosky netted another score 23 seconds into the period. Over the next seven minutes, the Yellow Jackets would find the back of the net four times after Bower and Braden netted two goals each. Braden's first goal marked his first career score for the Yellow Jackets. The Bearcats finally got onto the scoreboard with 5:22 remaining in the first half after Tare found the back of the net to make the score 10-1. BW extended their lead over the last four minutes and headed into halftime with a 12-1 lead after goals by Bower and Braden.

Puvel got the second half started for St. Vincent by finding the back of the net to make the score 12-2. BW answered a minute later as Bower netted his sixth goal of the game off a Steinwachs' pass. After both teams went scoreless over the next four minutes, the Bearcats responded with a goal of their own by Sosnak to cut BW's lead to 13-3. Junior midfielder Hunter Lute (North Canton) found Bower for the final goal of the stanza before both teams went scoreless for the last 3:46.

The fourth quarter saw Presutti and Schulte score two goals each in the period, both finding the net for the first time this seasonSophomore midfielder Gage Schneider (Hamburg, N.Y.), and senior midfielder Thomas Moesch (Ithaca, N.Y.) also scored their first goals of the season. St. Vincent was able to net three goals in the period to give the Yellow Jackets a 21-6 win.

The Yellow Jackets will continue the non-conference portion of their schedule when they travel to Gambier, Ohio on March 6 to face Kenyon College at 3:30 p.m.
