Mount Union Beats BW, 59-3, in Berea

BEREA, Ohio – Senior quarterback Kevin Burke passed for three touchdowns and ran for another as the third-ranked University of Mount Union football team defeated host Baldwin Wallace University, 59-3, in an Ohio Athletic Conference game before 4,990 fans on Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium on Seniors' & Parents' Day. This was BW's final home game this season.

Mount Union (9-0, 8-0 OAC) led 14-3 after one quarter, 42-3 at halftime and 49-3 after three periods.  The victory was the 20th straight for the Purple Raiders against the Yellow Jackets dating back to a 23-10 BW win in Alliance in 1994.  Mt. Union increased its all-time series advantage to 31-21-1. The series began in 1896. BW (5-4, 4-4 OAC) has won four of its last six games.  The Raiders had a 541-192 advantage in total offense including a 320-87 advantage through the air. 

The BW offense was led by junior quarterback Tyler Moeglin (Louisville/ St. Thomas Aquinas) as he completed 8 of 20 passes for 87 yards, but was sacked five times. The top receiver was senior tight end Darryl Jones (Cleveland/ Villa Angela-St. Joseph) with three catches for 41 yards. The defense was led by senior safety Davone Greer (Columbus/ Mifflin) with a game-high eight tackles. 

The Mt. Union offense was led by Burke who completed 25 of 35 passes for 301 yards with three TD's but was intercepted twice. He also ran for 36 yards in seven attempts with a TD. The ground game was led by sophomore RB Bradley Mitchell with 143 yards in 12 attempts with a TD. The receiving corps was led by junior WR Taurice Scott with 10 catches for 114 yards.  Also, junior WR Roman Namdar has four grabs for 29 yards with two TD's. The defense was led by junior linebacker Jonathan Gonell with seven tackles. 

In the first quarter, Mt. Union opened the scoring 17 seconds into the contest when Taurice Scott returned the opening kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown and senior placekicker Edward Ruhnke made the point-after-touchdown (PAT). Following a punt, Mt. Union fumbled and BW recovered. The Yellow Jackets turned it into three points when sophomore PK Joe Simonis (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) booted a career-long 39-yard field goal with 10:17 left. The boot kept Simonis perfect this season at 6-of-6 in field goal attempts. 

The Raiders increased their lead to 14-3 with 29 seconds left in the opening session when Burke threw a 6-yard bullet to Namdar in the right front corner of the end zone. Ruhnke added the PAT to complete an 8-play and 62-yard drive in 3:19.

In the second quarter, after a short BW punt, Burke threw his second TD pass to give Mt. Union a 21-3 lead at 14:30. This one was 42 yards to senior WR Sherman Wilkersoon on the first play. Ruhnke added the PAT. The Mt. Union lead grew to 28-3 at 11:40 when Mitchell ran 57 yards on the second play following another BW punt and Ruhnke added his fourth PAT boot. The Raiders continued their assault and built a 35-3 lead when Mitchell sped 13 yards and bulled his way to paydirt at 2:35. Ruhnke had his fifth PAT kick. Following another BW punt, Burke threw a 9-yard TD pass to Namdar with 25 seconds left. Ruhnke's PAT made it 42-3. 

In the third quarter, Mt. Union scored its lone TD with six seconds remaining when Burke ran 15 yards to the end zone and Ruhnke added the PAT to make it 49-3. The 8-play and 79-yard drive in 4:02 matched Mt. Union's longest drive of the day in terms of plays. 

In the fourth quarter, Ruhnke ran the score to 52-3 at 13:47 when Ruhnke nailed a 44-yard field goal into the wind. The score followed a BW fumble. The score grew to 59-3 at 8:22 when junior RB Brandon Williams ran six yards to the end zone and Ruhnke added his eighth PAT boot. 

BW returns to action next Saturday, November 15 when it travels to Tiffin, Ohio to play OAC rival Heidelberg University at Mayer Field at 1:30 p.m. in the final game of the season.
