Men's Swimming and Diving Finishes Seventh at Blue Devil Invite

FREDONIA, N.Y. – The Baldwin Wallace University men's and women's swimming and diving teams placed seventh and third, respectively, at the three-day Blue Devil Invitational hosted by Fredonia University in the Steele Hall Natatorium. 

The BW men were seventh of nine teams with 299 points.  Penn State Behrend College was the team champion with 825.5 points. The Yellow Jacket women were third of nine teams with 437.5 points. John Carroll University was the team champion with 893 points.

The men's team was led by senior All-American stroker Tyler Thompson (Broadview Heights/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) and sophomore All-Ohio Athletic Conference stroker Greg Shaw (Colorado Springs, Colo./Manitou Springs).

Thompson won the 100-yard breaststroke and placed fifth in the 200-yard individual medley in a season-best times of 56.49 seconds and 1:59.60. The senior also placed sixth in the 200-yard breaststroke with a season-best time of 2:13.89.

Shaw was the runner-up in the 100-yard butterfly and finished seventh in the 50-yard freestyle in a season-best times of 52.77 and 22.53 seconds.  

Freshman stroker Michael Morsch (Phoenix, Ariz./Notre Dame Preparatory) finished ninth in the 100-yard backstroke in a career-best time of 55.96 seconds.

Freshman stroker Kyle Cordrey (Mansfield/Ontario) placed fifth in the 200-yard butterfly with a season-best time of 2:04.28 while sophomore freestyler Austin Lockhart (Olmsted Falls) placed sixth in the same event with his season-best time of 2:08.46.

In relay action, the 400-yard medley relay squad of Morsch, Thompson, Shaw and Lockhart placed fourth in a season-best time of 3:36.41.  The 800-yard freestyle group of Cordrey, freshman stroker Matthew Butt (Westfield Center/Cloverleaf), Morsch and Lockhart took seventh in a season-best time of 7:29.63.  The 200-yard medley relay team of Morsch, Thompson, Shaw and Lockhart finished fourth in a season-best time of 1:37.97. The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Morsch, Lockhart, Thompson and Shaw placed seventh in a season-best time of 3:17.93.

BW returns to action on Friday, January 5, 2018 when it hosts a non-conference dual meet against Widener (Pa.) University as part of its annual winter training session in Florida at the Sarasota, Florida, YMCA at 5 p.m.
