Baseball Splits Rescheduled Doubleheader with Capital

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader with Capital University, 15-3 and 4-12, at Clowson Field.

BW (21-10, 10-4 OAC) plated fifteen runs off eighteen hits in game one, as three came across in the second, two in the third, one in the seventh, two in the eighth, and seven in the ninth to seal the 15-3 victory. Capital (11-20, 6-8 OAC) scored three runs off seven hits.

The Yellow Jacket offense was led by senior first baseman Philip Wells (Buffalo, N.Y./Saint Joseph's Collegiate) as he had a career-tying four hits, out of five at-bats, with a career-high three doubles, two runs-batted in (RBI), and scored four runs. Junior Academic All-OAC right fielder Brandon Dim (Solon) had a career-high three hits out of four at-bats, and drove in a career-tying three runs while scoring once. Sophomore shortstop Alex Ludwick (Brunswick/Padua Franciscan) went 3-for-4 at the plate with one RBI and a run scored. Junior designated hitter Sam Sustersic (Richfield/Revere) went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Freshman catcher JT Mazula (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) had one hit with three RBI and scored twice. Sophomore third baseman Luke Razzante (Highland Heights/Mayfield) tallied an RBI single in the second before being pinch-hit for by sophomore third baseman Tony LoParo (Avon/Elyria Catholic), where he had one hit and two runs scored. Senior left fielder Jacob Bonner (Akron/Archbishop Hoban) and senior left fielder Lane Niemann (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale South) each recorded one hit, one run, and one RBI. Senior second baseman Kyle Pennington (Wadsworth) marked a hit and a run scored while senior center fielder Asa Adams (Sarver, Pa./Knoch) recorded an RBI.

On the rubber was senior American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings All-Mideast Region and All-OAC right-handed pitcher Danny Cody (Medina/ Brecksville-Broadview Hts.), and his outing included six innings pitched where he allowed two runs (zero earned) off four hits and struck out 12 en route to his seventh win. Sophomore right-handed pitcher Nick Smith (Mentor) earned a three inning save after allowing one run (unearned) off three hits and struck out two.

In game two, the Yellow Jackets scored four runs off seven hits with one run crossing in the third and fourth, before two more in the seventh. Capital plated 12 runs off 14 hits.

The offense was led by designated hitter Bonner as he went 2-of-3 with a run scored. Adams and Ludwick each recorded one hit, one RBI, and one run scored. Wells notched a double and a run scored while left fielder Niemann had a hit and an RBI. Pennington tallied one hit and senior two-time Academic All-OAC right fielder drove home one run.

Junior righty Spencer Aukerman (Medina) made the start in game two and allowed four runs (three unearned) off four hits and struck out two in two innings of work. Senior lefty Jack Raines (Akron/Archbishop Hoban) entered in relief and went 2.2 innings where he allowed eight runs off nine hits and tallied two strikeouts. Freshman right-handed pitcher Garrett Miller (McMurray) was next in line and dealt 2.1 innings where he allowed zero runs off one hit and struck out three. Junior Academic All-OAC Michael Hubert (Cincinnati/Oak Hills) pitched the eighth and allowed zero runs off zero hits and struck out two.

BW will be back in action on Saturday, April 27 when they welcome Otterbein University to Fisher Field for an OAC doubleheader with game one scheduled for 1 p.m and game two for 4 p.m.
