BEREA, Ohio – Twelve three-pointers propelled the Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team to a 90-63 Ohio Athletic Conference victory over Wilmington College inside Ursprung Gymnasium.
BW (8-5, 4-2 OAC) was led by senior Academic All-OAC guard Katie Smith (Fairview Park/Fairview), who put up a career high 19 points. Sophomore guard Kasey Hughes (Springboro) hit double digits for the second game in a row, scoring 12 points.
Wilmington (7-6, 2-4 OAC) had two players find double figures, led by junior guard Mackenzie Campbell with 16 points. Senior guard Savannah Hooper added 10 points of her own.
A perfect 6-for-6 from the three throw line plus hot three point shooting propelled the Yellow Jackets to a strong start, leading 24-15 at the end of the first quarter. Seven different players made offensive contributions in the period, highlighted by a banked three-point shot from the hands of transfer sophomore guard/forward Mary Schentur (Broadview Heights/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) with 1:29 remaining.
Smith and Hughes continued their sharp shooting in the second quarter as BW got off to a 6-2 run, taking a 32-17 lead at the 7:03 mark. Smith was feeling it from beyond the arc as she sank three three-pointers in the period and five treys overall while the Yellow Jackets maintained a double-digit advantage over the Quakers. Sophomore guard Riley Schill (Sheffield Village/Elyria Catholic) capped off the half by hitting a jumper as time expired, giving BW a 45-29 lead heading into halftime.
Junior Academic All-OAC forward Rachel Womeldorf (Lewis Center/Olentangy) and junior All-OAC guard Hannah Fecht (Hilliard/Davidson) opened up the second half with back-to-back three-pointers as the Yellow Jackets built up to a 20-point advantage. With Wilmington focusing on defending the three-point line, BW began to work the ball inside the paint and made several easy layup and went into the fourth quarter with a 70-47 lead.
Wilmington could not overcome 20-plus point deficit as the Yellow Jacket offense never got out of rhythm, winning by a final score of 90-63.
BW will travel out to Ada on Wednesday, January 10, to take on the 14th ranked Ohio Northern University Polar Bears at 7:30 p.m. inside the ONU Sports Center.
