Women’s Basketball Drops OAC Game to #19 Marietta

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team was defeated by No. 19-nationally ranked Marietta College in an Ohio Athletic Conference game by a final score of 82-72 in the Ban Johnson Arena. 

BW (12-7, 8-4 OAC) had two players score in double figures led by sophomore guard Riley Schill (Sheffield Lake/Elyria Catholic), who is this week's OAC Player of the Week, with 21 points.  Junior All-OAC guard/forward Hannah Fecht (Hilliard/Davidson) chipped in 19 points.

Marietta (17-2, 10-2 OAC), who swept the season series, had four players score in double digits led by senior All-OAC guard Amisha Heard as she scored a game-high 22 points.  Senior All-OAC guard Brooke Borich poured in 18 points.  Junior guard Shay Lett chipped in 12 points while junior forward Corrie Burkhardt contributed 10 points.

The Pioneers jumped out to an 13-3 lead in the first quarter on a layup by Borich buried at the 7:29 mark.  The Yellow Jackets cut the lead down to 22-20 when sophomore guard Schill hit a three-pointer at 2:10. Marietta outscored BW, 5-3, down the stretch to lead 27-23 after one quarter of action.

The Yellow Jackets opened the second quarter on a 10-0 run to take a at 33-27 when Fecht buried a triple at the 7:02 mark.  Marietta cut the lead down to 38-37 when Marlo Taylo spilt a pair of free throws at 2:40.   BW outscored the Pioneers, 3-2 down the stretch to take a 41-39 lead into halftime.

Marietta opened the second half and third quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 45-41 lead on a jumper by Borich at the 7:42 mark.  The Yellow Jackets cut the lead down to 50-48 on a jumper by Schill at 6:50.   The Pioneers extended their lead to 58-53 when Borich scored on a layup at the 2:34 mark.    BW cut the lead down to 58-56 on a three-pointer by Fecht at 2:20. Marietta scored the final two points of the quarter to lead 60-56 after the third stanza.

The Yellow Jackets opened the final quarter of play on a 9-4 run to take a 65-64 lead on a jumper by sophomore guard Tiffany Bentler (North Canton/Hoover) at the 7:56 mark.  The Pioneers regained the lead for good at 68-67 when Lett knocked down a jumper at 5:55. Marietta outscored BW, 14-5, the remainder of the game to secure the win.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, January 31 when they host an OAC game against No. 10-nationally ranked and defending OAC Champion Ohio Northern University in the Ursprung Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.
