Men’s Volleyball Drops MCVL Match to Mount Union

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University men's volleyball team faced University of Mount Union for a Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League showdown in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside of the Lou Higgins Center. The Yellow Jackets fell in three sets to the Purple Raiders by final scores of 25-21, 25-14, and 29-27. 

BW (21-7, 4-1 MCVL) was led by junior All-MCVL outside hitter Michael Beard (Hilliard/Darby) as he notched nine kills, three digs, and two aces. Freshman libero Aiden Kim (Bothell, Wash./North Creek) tallied a team-high 12 digs while freshman middle hitter Josh Steinitz (Towson, Md./Friends School of Baltimore) totaled six kills, hitting .750 on the day.

Mount Union (16-5, 4-1 MCVL) was led by junior right side hitter Jack McClure as he totaled nine kills and six digs. Sophomore libero Aaron Armour notched a match-high 13 digs. 

1st Set

  • BW trailed 20-18 late in the set, calling its first timeout of the day
  • Out of the break, Mount Union tallied two straight points on a kill and an ace to put the Purple Raiders up 22-18, forcing another Yellow Jacket break
  • An ace by Beard brought the game within two (23-21 UMU) but the Purple Raiders closed set one with back-to-back points (25-21) 

2nd Set

  • The Purple Raiders got out to an early 6-2 lead to start the second game, forcing BW to a timeout
  • The Yellow Jackets trailed 14-6 before taking their second timeout
  • Mount Union remained strong and the Yellow Jackets couldn't overcome the deficit, dropping set two 25-14

3rd Set 

  • A block by the sophomore right side hitter Michael Devlin (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) and Steinitz duo put BW up 17-16, and an error by the Purple Raiders put BW 18-16, forcing the away team to a timeout
  • Beard notched another kill, putting BW up 22-20 late in the game
  • A block by junior outside hitter Nick Irelan (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) earned BW the advantage point at 24-23
  • Despite the Yellow Jackets earned two advantage points, BW couldn't close out the game
  • With the score 27-27, a kill by Mount Union and error by the Yellow Jackets clinched the win for the Purple Raiders, winning set three (29-27) and the match (3-0)

BW returns to the hardwood on Saturday, April 1 as the team travels to St. Louis, Mo. to take on Fontbonne University in an MCVL contest. The match is set to begin at 2:00 p.m. EST on the Dr. Lee McKinney Court inside of the Mabee Gymnasium.
