Men’s Volleyball Falls to Hiram in Four Sets in Non-Conference Match

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University men's volleyball team hosted a non-conference match against Hiram College in Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center. The Yellow Jackets fell 3-1 to the Terriers (14-11) by set scores of 25-17, 25-19, 18-25, and 25-17.

BW (7-16) was led by sophomore All-MCVL outside hitter Michael Beard (Hilliard/Darby) as he tallied 15 kills (.379) and 11 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Nick Irelan (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) posted 12 kills and six digs while sophomore right side hitter Nick Mazzone (Springboro/Bishop Fenwick) earned 10 kills. Sophomore setter Brandon Long (Hinckley/Metea Valley, Ill.) dished out 39 assists and added 10 digs.

1st Set

  • Big kill on outside by the Terriers earned Hiram 11-8 lead
  • Notching two more points, BW took a timeout, down 13-8
  • A kill for the Terriers and a Yellow Jacket hitting error gave the Terriers a 17-11 advantage, forcing BW to its second timeout
  • The Terriers outscored the Yellow Jackets 8-6 to close set one, 25-17 

2nd Set

  • A 3-0 run put the Terriers up 15-12 to force BW its first timeout
  • A huge kill on the second ball by Long and an ace by Long earned BW some momentum and closed the gap to one (15-16)
  • Hiram went on a short 4-0 run to force the Yellow Jackets to their second timeout of the set
  • The terriers went on to win the set, 25-19

3rd Set

  • Back-to-back points for BW earned the Yellow Jackets some separation at 13-11, and forced Hiram to a timeout
  • A service error by the Terriers put BW up 23-18 late in the set
  • The Yellow Jackets closed the set on a Terrier service error and hitting error, 25-18

4th Set

  • Hiram got out to the quick 5-0 jump before BW got on the board with a kill by Irelan
  • The Terriers went on a small run to go up 10-4, forcing the first timeout of the set to the
  • A big block on the right side by Mazzone and Junker wasn't enough as the Terriers went up 15-11, forcing BW to a timeout
  • The Terriers grabbed the next three points to force BW to its second timeout
  • Hiram closed the set (25-17) and match (3-1)

The Yellow Jackets return to play Friday, March 25 as they host Wabash (Ind.) College in a MCVL match. First serve against the Little Giants is set for 7:00 p.m. in Ursprung Gymnasium.
