Baldwin-Wallace Football Team Defeats Capital, 17-0, in Berea in Season Finale

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College football team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Capital University, 17-0, today (Saturday, November 15, 2008) on Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium in Berea before 1,970 fans in the season finale for each team.

With its win, B-W ends its season at 5-5 overall and 5-4 in the OAC to tie for third place and secure its 42ndseason with a .500 or better record in the past 43 years.  With their loss, the Crusaders end the season at 5-5 overall and 4-5 in the OAC.

B-W led 3-0 after one quarter, at halftime and after three quarters and then scored 14 fourth-quarter points to secure its first win versus Capital in the last four seasons.

B-W opened the scoring at the 53-second mark of the first quarter when sophomore placekicker Brad Pollock (Broadview Heights/ Brecksville-Broadview Heights) kicked a 27-yard field goal to cap a 10-play 46-yard drive that took 4:16.

The Yellow Jackets extended their lead to 10-0 at the 14:20 mark of the final stanza when freshman running back Tim Miker (Parma/ Senior) scored on a three-yard run to cap a seven-play and 37-yard drive in 2:41 andPollock added the point-after-touchdown kick. The scoring drive was set up when senior defensive tackle Joe Kowalski (Macedonia/ Nordonia) blocked a Crusader punt.

B-W scored the final points of the game with 44 seconds left when senior RB Craig Lindsley (Huron) hit paydirt from four yards out and Pollock made his second PAT. A bad snap on a Crusader punt attempt led to the eight-play and 28 yard drive in 4:48.

Offensively, B-W outgained Capital in total yards, 317-58, and was led by junior RB Kyrell Crook (Columbus deSales) who ran for 90 yards in 26 attempts. Quarterback Anthony Gardner (Rocky River/ Lakewood St. Edward) completed eight-of-19 passes for 84 yards and ran for 58 yards in 19 attempts to compliment Crook.Lindsley also ran for 75 yards in 11 attempts with his TD.  Also, senior wide receiver Matt Lepley (Bellevue)caught a team-high six passes for 64 yards and ended his final season with a single-season school-record 69 receptions.

Defensively, the Yellow Jackets held Capital to minus seven yards rushing on 23 attempts.  Kowalski had his best game as a collegian with seven tackles, a QB sack, his first career interception, two QB hurries and the critical blocked punt. In addition, junior middle linebacker Paul Burger (Mentor) had six tackles and led the team this season with 73 total stops. Also, senior safety Karl Schreiber (Bay Village/ Bay) had two of the three interceptions.

Offensively, a pair of Capital QBs, Kory Hartinger (eight-of-15 for 54 yards) and Nick Alexander (five-of-11 for 11 yards) were intercepted three times. Matt White and Derick Alexander led the Crusaderv receiving corps with five catches each.

Today's game is be televised via tape delay on SportsTime Ohio at 4:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. on Nov. 15 and at 5:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. on both Nov. 16 and Nov. 17. Veteran sportscaster Adam Mendoza and STO sportscaster and 1990 B-W graduate and television 'Voice of the Cleveland Indians' Matt Underwood will call the game.
