James Meyer Named Defensive Coordinator at Baldwin Wallace University

BEREA, OHIO -- Baldwin-Wallace College Head Football Coach John Snell has selected James M. Meyeras his new Defensive Coordinator. He succeeds Adam Howard, who left B-W in February to accept the head coaching position at NCAA Division II Notre Dame College (of Ohio).

Meyer joins a B-W football program which finished the 2008 campaign at 5-5 overall and had its 42nd season with a .500 or better record in the last 43 years.  He inherits a Yellow Jacket defense that returns seven starters and allowed 328.5 yards per game to rank fifth last season in the Ohio Athletic Conference.

"Jim has a proven track record as a solid teacher of the game of football and as a football coach,"said Snell, who enters his eighth season as head coach at BW and has compiled a fine 46-26 career record.  "Jim has served as a head coach and in a number of other capacities during his career and we feel that he will be an outstanding addition to our staff.

"Jim knows the state of Ohio well and has recruited Northeast Ohio for many years," said Snell.  "We feel that his knowledge of the game of football, his leadership and ability to attract quality young men to the College will be his strengths.  We look forward to working with him."

Meyer, a 1978 graduate of the University of Akron, comes to B-W after a one-year stint as the Special Teams Coordinator and Linebackers Coach at Division II Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. Meyer's special teams unit finished third in the nation in kickoff return average at 25.89 yards-per-return. He also coached two linebackers to Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors on a defense that ranked second in the GLIAC.

Prior to Wayne State,  Meyer was the Assistant Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator at Division II Ashland University from 2004 to 2007. His defense ranked seventh in the nation in 2005 at 265.8 ypg. He helped lead the 2007 squad to an 8-1 record and a spot in the NCAA Division II National Playoffs.

Meyer has twice coached defensive ends at his alma mater, including mentoring now NFL All-Pro Jason Taylor in 1996. He has also made stops in the collegiate ranks at Malone College from 2001-02, Kenyon College from 1987-94 and Bethany (W.Va.) College from 1982-87. While at Kenyon, Meyer served as head coach and was named North Coast Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1989.

Meyer also spent time as Head Football Coach and Athletic Director at Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary High School from 1997 to 2001. His first coaching job was as a graduate assistant at the University of Akron in 1976.

Meyer graduated from St. Vincent-St. Mary in 1973 and received  his Bachelor of Science degree in health and physical education from Akron.  He also earned his Master of Science in P.E. degree from Akron in 1981.
