No. 13 BW Wrestlers Place Sixth at Pete Willson Invitational

WHEATON, Illinois – No. 13-nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University wrestling team finished sixth of 32 teams teams at the Pete Willson Invitational hosted by Wheaton College. The invitational featured nine teams ranked in the top 30 nationally, including three in the top five.

The Yellow Jackets (15-4, 2-0 OAC) had five wrestlers finish in the top eight led by junior 165-pounder David Shapiro (Beachwood) with a third place finish.  Sophomore 141-pounder Josh Decatur (Akron / Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) placed fourth, junior 174-pounder Garrett Chase (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) and junior 149-pounder Joe Schmidt (Hinckley/Brunswick) each brought home a fifth place finish and junior 184-pounder Ben Lebrun (Strongsville) finished seventh.

Shapiro had a first round bye.  He then won two straight matches by decision with an 8-4 victory against Eric Kirkman of North Central (Ill.) and a 4-2 win against Stephen Aiello of Wheaton.  After a lost in the semifinals, Shapiro defeated Aiello for the second time with an 11-6 decision to take third place.

Decatur had a first round bye then won by a 7-4 decision against Matt Quigley of Elmhurst.  He then lost to the top-seed and eventual champion Kaleb Loht of Messiah (Pa.) before posting two straight decision victories.  Decatur defeated Chad Lammer of Elizabethtown (Pa.) by a score of 4-2 and then knocked off Adam Yde of Wisconsin-Parkside by a score of 8-4.   He then fell to Layten Binion of North Central to place fourth.

Schmidt pinned Clayton Cappes of Manchester (Ind.) in one minute in the first round before receiving a default victory against Chris Williamson of Messiah.  After a loss, he won a 5-0 decision of Evan Morgan of Ohio Northern before suffering another loss.  Schmidt won his fifth place match by a medical forfeit.

Chase had a first round bye then won an 8-0 major decision against Jake Kroeger of Lakeland (Ill.).  He then suffered a loss before posting a 6-3 decision against Nick Ferraro of Chicago (Ill.).  Chase lost his next match then won a 4-0 decision against Jordan Richardson of Augustana (Ill.) to claim fifth place.

Lebrun won his first match with an 8-2 decision against Dan Olsen of Wheaton and won his second match with an 11-3 major decision victory against Vince Pizzo of North Central.  After suffering a loss, he won a 7-3 decision against Rodney Harvey of Olivet (Mich.). Lebrun suffered his second loss before winning his 7th place match with a pin against Cody Nielsen of Wisconsin-Stevens points in 1:59.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Tuesday, February 3 when they host No.7-ranked the University of Mount Union in an OAC dual match in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center at 7:30 p.m.
