Four BW Wrestlers Named as Division III Scholar All-Americans

BEREA, Ohio – Four Baldwin Wallace University wrestlers, including, junior two-time Division III All-American Jesse Gunter (Akron/Coventry), were named to the NWCA (National Wrestling Coaches Association) Scholar All-American Team. In addition, BW ranked in a tie for 18th nationally with a team cumulative grade point average of 3.35 overall.

The other three Yellow Jacket academic all-stars are junior Ben LeBrun (Strongsville), sophomore Andrew Shackelford (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) and freshman Tyler Maclellan (Medina/ Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy). This is the second straight year that both Gunter and LeBrun have been honored by the NWCA. 

 "We are extremely pleased to be ranked 18th as a team and have four individual Scholar All-Americans," said fourth-year Head Coach Jamie Gibbs, who led his team to a school-record 17 victories,a 17-6 record, a sixth place finish at the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional and a 20th place showing at the Div. III National Tournament. "This is a tribute to our young men who work extremely hard both in the classroom and on the wrestling mats.  We also hope that this is motivation for both our current student-athletes and recruits."

Gunter carries a 3.28 grade point average in education and wants to teach and coach. The Dean's List student is a three-time All-OAC selection and two-time NCAA Division III All-American. The past two years, he has placed third in 2014 and fourth this winter at the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament and has been the runner-up the past two years at the Mideast Regional Tournament. This season, Gunter had a 27-5 record and will enter his senior season with a 90-12 mark.

LeBrun, who carries a 3.73 grade point average in international studies, also is a three-year starter and two-time Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference selection. He also is a Dean's List student and a Jacket Scholar. The starter at 184 pounds this season compiled a 31-13 record. He enters his senior season with a 73-44 career mark.

Shackelford carries a 3.68 grade point average in exercise science and is a Dean's List student. The 2014 BW "Rookie of the Year" had a strong sophomore season with a 30-12 record as he split his time between the 197 and 285-pound weight classes. Shackelford also received Academic All-OAC honors. He will enter his junior year with a 48-27 career mark.

Maclellan carries a 3.76 grade average in accounting and is a Dean's List student. He earned the starting spot at 197 pounds and had an outstanding freshman season. Maclellan compiled a 19-7 record and earned first-team All-OAC honors.

This winter, the Yellow Jacket wrestlers set a school-record with 17 wins, had a 17-6 overall record, including a 4-1 slate versus rugged OAC foes, placed sixth at the Mideast Regional and 20th at the national tourney. Its 20th-place showing at the NCAA tournament was the best by an OAC school.
